The Nikon Coolpix S620 couples a 12.2 effective megapixel image sensor with a Nikkor-branded 4x optical zoom lens that offers 35mm-equivalent focal lengths from a useful 28mm wide angle to a 112mm telephoto. Maximum aperture varies from f/2.7 to f/5.8 across the zoom range. As well as true mechanical image stabilization, the Nikon S620 offers the ability to vary its sensitivity manually from a minimum of ISO 100 to a maximum of ISO 6,400 equivalent - so it should definitely be able to freeze camera shake and subject motion.

The Nikon S620 is capable of focusing to 1.7 feet (50 centimeters) ordinarily, and as close as 0.8 inches (two centimeters) in macro mode. Coolpix S620 images must be framed and reviewed on the camera's 2.7", 230,000 dot LCD display as there's no optical viewfinder on this model. Images are stored on Secure Digital cards, including the newer Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) types, or in a relatively generous 45MB of built-in memory. Power comes courtesy of a proprietary EN-EL12 Lithium Ion rechargeable battery that's rated as good for 250 shots to CIPA testing standards, and is included in the product bundle.

The Nikon Coolpix S620 will be offered from February 2009, with expected pricing of $270 or thereabouts. The body color selections available in North America will be Noble Purple, Jet Black, Dusty Pink, Sky Blue and Rich Pearl.
