Samsung SH100 Overview

Posted 01/04/2011

The Samsung SH100 features a 1/2.33"-type, 14.2 megapixel, CCD image sensor behind a Samsung-branded 5x optical zoom lens. The SH100's lens offers 35mm-equivalent focal lengths from a useful 26mm wide angle to a moderate 130mm telephoto, but lacks any form of mechanical image stabilization. Instead, there's only what Samsung terms "Digital Image Stabilization", which attempts to reduce the effects of blur by raising the ISO sensitivity (and along with this, both the shutter speeds and noise levels). There's no optical viewfinder, with images being framed on a 3.0-inch, 230,000 dot LCD display, which also doubles as an input device, thanks to a touch screen panel overlay.

The Samsung SH100 has the ability to record high definition movies at 720p resolution, although we don't currently have information on frame rate, file compression or type. The SH100 also includes wireless LAN connectivity, along with a Boingo account of unspecified duration, although precise details as to its WiFi network compatibility aren't available. We do know, however, that it's possible to email photos and videos from the camera to contacts stored in its address book, and to upload them directly to Facebook, Picasa, Photobucket, or YouTube.

It's also compatible with Samsung AllShare, the company's brandname for DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compatibility, which allows sharing of data between the camera and other DLNA-compatible devices. It can also automatically back up images to a PC that's currently in sleep mode, so long as the PC supports wake-on-LAN for its wifi connection. More unusually, it can allow remote control via wifi from compatible, wifi-capable smart phones, including a live view feed on the phone itself, and the ability to adjust zoom, basic menu parameters and shooting options, then trip the shutter release remotely.

The Samsung SH100 also has a Smart Auto 2.0 mode which automatically selects a scene mode as appropriate, face recognition technology, a beauty shot mode that yields smoother skin tones, and a self portrait function.

The Samsung SH100 ships from March, priced at around US$200.
