The Olympus C-765 Ultra Zoom is the latest in an ongoing line of long-zoom digicams from Olympus. While the long-zoom market is getting more crowded these days, Olympus really pioneered it with their excellent C-2100, and still retains a commanding position with their latest C-765 and C-770 models. The Olympus C-765 UltraZoom sports a four megapixel CCD and a full 10x zoom lens, a new TruePic Turbo processor and a larger LCD, along with a range of features tailored to "enthusiast" users looking for full exposure control, although it lacks the compatibility with external flash units offered by its "big brother," the C770.

In most respects, the C-765 Ultra Zoom is very similar to the earlier C-750, C-740, and C-730 models that preceded it, except for a few tweaks and a new body style. It's about the same size and weight, and has the same zoom ratio and manual controls (such as adjustable AF area, long exposure times, and scene modes). The main difference between the past models is the 765's larger LCD and inclusion of a Li-ion battery pack instead of the 4 AA batteries previous models used. Continuing Olympus' stated intent of standardizing on the new xD-Picture Card memory format, the C-765 accepts only xD cards for image storage. The C-765 also carries forward the well-received "My Camera" menu, which lets users custom-configure a broad range of settings to meet specific needs, as well as the full range of exposure options. Compared to the current higher-end C-770 model, the C-765 saves money by dropping the dual-range internal flash design of the 770, as well as the onboard speaker and hot shoe connection for use with external flash units. All in all, the C-765 Ultra Zoom is an impressive, full-blown "enthusiast" camera with an unusually long-ratio zoom lens, selling at an attractive price point.
