A patent, published on April 20th, reveals Canon may be looking to update its EF-S 15–85mm f/3.5–5.6 IS lens.

Originally filed back in October of 2010, the patent lays out the basic optical formula for a replacement to Canon’s versatile zoom lens for APS-C sensors.

The design of the overall lens doesn’t appear to change much, but as Canon Rumors notes, this update could very well be meant to incorporate Canon’s stepping motor (STM) to better suit video needs over Canon’s Ultrasonic Motor (USM) technology.

The first iteration of the lens is only 6 years old, a mere toddler in lens years, but it wouldn’t hurt to have a solid update for Canon’s 7D Mark II higher end kit lens.
