COLOGNE, Germany, September 24 -- Eastman Kodak Company today introduced three new image sensors that enable camera manufacturers to significantly enhance the resolution, performance, and image quality of their digital cameras. These sensors are ideal for a wide range of digital camera users, from amateur through the most advanced professional and commercial photographer applications.

These new initiatives extend Kodak's leadership in the rapidly growing infoimaging market and illustrate the company's intent to create new businesses:

  • Kodak announced that it is working in partnership with Olympus Optical Co., Ltd., to develop image sensors for use in the new 4/3 System - an emerging standard for next-generation, digital single-lens-reflex (SLR) cameras. Kodak's image sensors will enable Olympus, Kodak and other manufacturers, building to the 4/3 System standard, to produce smaller, lighter digital SLRs that offer higher quality and richer features for the professional & advanced amateur photographers. Specific details on Kodak's initial 4/3 System sensor will be available shortly.
  • The Kodak KAF-22000CE image sensor, a 22-million pixel full-frame color CCD image sensor designed in conjunction with Sinar AG, the renowned Swiss manufacturer of digital and analog camera systems. The KAF-22000CE is the world's highest resolution image sensor for the professional photographic market.
  • The Kodak KAI-11000CM image sensor, an 11-million pixel interline transfer CCD color image sensor that enables professional photographers to capture high-resolution images with a full-field 35mm format sensor.
"With more than 20 years of expertise in the image sensor market, Kodak's Image Sensor Solutions (ISS) division is committed to being the world's leading supplier of image sensors meeting the needs of its varied customers in the photography, medical imaging, scientific and industrial image markets," said Dona Flamme, general manager of Kodak's Image Sensor Solutions division. "Today's announcements further demonstrate Kodak's ability to work closely with camera manufacturers to develop image sensors that provide professional and amateur photographers with the highest-resolution digital images available in the market."

Kodak Customizes KAF-22000CE Image Sensor for Increased Resolution and Performance
Kodak announced the Kodak KAF-22000CE, a 22-million pixel full-frame color CCD image sensor designed in conjunction with Sinar AG of Switzerland. The Kodak sensor provides a total silicon area of 38.8mm x 50.0mm, twice the photographic area of traditional 35mm film. The Sinar 22-million pixel digital camera system using Kodak's sensor allows commercial and studio photographers to "digitize" their medium- and large-format cameras with a large optical format image sensor for use in high-end photographic applications.

"Kodak's ability to work one-on-one with camera manufacturers in the design of image sensors provides Sinar a tremendous advantage in the market," said Carl-Jurg Koch, managing director of marketing for Sinar AG. "As a result of Sinar's collaboration with Kodak, we are able to build the world's highest resolution and largest optical format professional digital camera system. Using the Kodak sensor, our new camera will extend the performance of medium and large format cameras beyond the image quality achievable with 35mm format sensors and will establish a new photographic standard for the commercial and studio photography industry."

Kodak KAI-11000CM and Support Chips Offer a 35mm Optical Format with Motion Preview Capability
In addition, Kodak unveiled the Kodak KAI-11000CM, an 11-million pixel interline transfer CCD color image sensor that enables professional photographers to capture high-resolution images with a full-field 35mm format image sensor. The sensor eliminates the focal length magnification errors associated with the use of smaller, APS-format image sensors used in 35mm SLR cameras with traditional 35mm lenses. The KAI-11000CM also provides a fluid motion preview for viewing subjects on a studio monitor, making it ideal for portrait and social applications.

The Kodak KAI-11000CM image sensor is also supported by two ancillary integrated circuit chips, which improve the efficiency of camera system development efforts and reduces the commercialization cycle time for new camera products. The Kodak KSC-1000 Timing Generator is a flexible, user-programmable chip that provides the required CCD timing for various modes of sensor operation. The Kodak KSC-2000 Clock Driver provides all of the clock voltages required to drive CCD image sensors used in digital imaging applications.

Availability
Details on Kodak 4/3 System sensors will be available shortly. The KAF-22000CE is in production today with the Sinarback 54. The Kodak KAI-11000CM is also immediately available to its customers.
