Adobe Systems Inc. has today announced the upcoming release of an update to its Photoshop Elements software on the Windows platform.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, slated for availability in the fourth quarter of this year, offers a range of new and updated features in all areas. Priced at $99.99 (and available in a bundle with the latest version of Adobe Premiere Elements for $149.99), Elements 5.0 will require either the Home, Professional or Media Center Edition 2004 flavors of Microsoft's Windows XP SP2, along with a 1.3GHz+ P4 or Celeron equivalent processor, 256MB of RAM, and 1.5GB of hard disk space.
A newly updated Photo Downloader tool helps import photos from your digital camera, with the ability to automatically group similar photos, and to tag or manually group images as they're downloaded. Once they're downloaded, editing enhancements include improved sharpening and distortion correction capabilities, new Adjust Color Curves controls, and the ability to convert to black and white by selecting from an array of variation samples.
When you're ready to share your images, there are new themed layouts with simple drag'n'drop positioning / resizing, plus over 100 "frames" for your images, the ability to create multi-page albums or scrapbooks, plus support for image animations. There's an increased range of CD / DVD covers and photo / scrapbook layouts, as well as new support for CEIVA digital photo frames and (for US users), the ability to have your images turned into postage stamps.
Two other interesting additions are a new "Map view" which allows you to drag and drop images to a location on a map, and then upload the resulting view to the web, plus a new online photo backup service in partnership with Iron Mountain Inc.
