Not to be outdone in the race for more memory, SanDisk Corporation introduced four new high-capacity cards at PMA: 256-, 384-, and 512MB CompactFlash cards, plus a 128MB SmartMedia card. What makes these CF cards so special is their price points. The CF cards will range in price from $399 for the 256MB to $799 for the 512MB -- much lower than originally anticipated.
SanDisk Corporation introduced its new high-capacity flash memory cards this week, including 256-, 384-, and 512MB CompactFlash Type I cards, developed for use in the burgening 3-, 4-, and 5-megapixel digital camera market, and a 128MB SmartMedia card was also released.
"Having more than a half-gigabyte of removable (CompactFlash) storage means consumers can store hundreds or more high-quality digital images, MP3 music files, or even video on the same card," said Nelson Chan, senior vice president of wordwide sales and marketing.
The SanDisk announcement was made nearly simultaneously with competing manufacturers, which as a whole, seem to be in a high-pressure race to build bigger and fast media, simply to keep pace with improved performance digital cameras and consumer electronics.
While previewing the new cards, Imaging Resource also had an opportunity to view SanDisk's recently introduced Secure Digital (SD) Card sets, a new memory standard for consumer electronics devices and e-commerce.
Designed by a consortium of Matsushita Electric, SanDisk, and Toshiba, the SD cards are about the size of a postage stamp, and will provide built-in security technology for audio and video devices such as portable music players, global positiong systems, electronic books, and personal video players. The SanDisk SD Cards will be available in 32- and 64MB initially, with 128- and 256MB capacities available later this year.
Suggested retail prices for the new CompactFlash cards are: $399 for the 256MB, $599 for the 384MB, and $799 for the 512MB size. The 128MB SmartMedia card is priced at $189.
