Following on from Vivitar's announcement of the ViviCam 2795, the company has announced a 2.4x optical zoom, 2.3 megapixel camera, the Vivicam 3655. As with the previous camera, the unit is actually manufactured by Taiwanese manufacturer Premier (Pretec), and features CompactFlash storage. Unlike its lower-cost sibling however, the 3655 also includes a 1.8" color LCD display...:

UPDATED 2001-02-19 22:51ET: - We thought this camera looked familiar as we were writing this item up, and a little sleuthing revealed that we were right... Polaroid's PDC-2300Z (below) looks to us to be identical - right down to the $399 price tag. I guess we know who makes the Polaroid unit now - Premier / Pretec! ;)

VIVITAR PRESENTS VIVICAM 3655 COMPACT 2.3 MEGAPIXEL DIGITAL CAMERA WITH COLOR LCD SCREEN LOS ANGELES (February 11, 2001) - Vivitar Corporation today introduced the ViviCam 3655, a compact digital camera with a 1.8" color LCD for real time image display. It is an affordable yet feature-packed camera for users who would like to enter the world of digital photography.
The ergonomic ViviCam 3655 is equipped with a 2.3 megapixel CCD iamge sensor. It has a built in 4.6x (2.3x optical and 2x digital) zoom lens with a focal length of 8mm to 18mm and a focal range from 40cm to infinity. The camera supports CompactFlash cards and images are saved as JPEG files. An 8MB CompactFlash card will store 7 fine, 14 normal or 29 economy resolution photos.
Users can preview their photos on the color LCD screen. They may also review the photos they have taken using either single image playback or nine images at a time in a thumbnail display.
Other features include a built-in flash and a 10 second self-timer. The ViviCam 3655 comes with an AC power port, USB port, serial port and video output cables to download images for viewing and editing. Power is supplied by four AA alkaline batteries.
The estimated retail price is $399.95. The ViviCam 3655 may be purchased at mass merchandisers, consumer electronics stores and other Vivitar resellers nationwide.
