Continuing its flood of PMA digital camera announcements, Samsung Opto-Electronics America Inc. has announced its new Digimax 250 model.

Combining a 1/3.2" 2.10 megapixel (effective) CCD image sensor with a 38 - 76mm equivalent 2x optical zoom lens, the Digimax 250 also offers a 1.5" LCD display, five mode flash, Secure Digital / Multimediacard storage and 6MB of built-in flash memory. There's also USB 1.1, DC Input and NTSC / PAL video output connectivity, and power comes from 2 AA or one Samsung I-Pack battery. Interestingly, the camera also offers an MPEG4 movie mode, which should yield higher quality or a smaller file size than that from most digicams which use QuickTime MotionJPEG or PhotoJPEG video.

The Samsung Digimax 250 will cost $139.99; availability information has not been announced.

Original Source Press Release:

SAMSUNG DIGIMAX 250 OFFERS STATE-OF-THE-ART FEATURES AND TECHNOLOGY IN AN AFFORDABLE, EASY-TO-USE PACKAGE

SECAUCUS, N.J., (February 12, 2004) – Consumers who want all of the latest features and technologies in an easy-to-use, affordable digital still camera are about to find what they're looking for in the new Samsung Digimax 250 model. Introduced at PMA 2004, the Samsung Digimax 250 is a compact, 2.1 megapixel digital camera with a sleek ergonomic design, 2x optical and 2x digital zoom, still and video image capture capabilities and a host of additional features and functions. Best of all, it comes at an approximate street price of just $139.99, making it as easy to own as it is to use!

The Samsung Digimax 250 was designed to meet the needs of even the most budget?conscious consumers who want to experience everything the digital world has to offer. With 2x optical and 2x digital zoom, multiple power sources, MPEG-4 video compression and a host of creative capabilities, there isn't much that can't be done with the Digimax 250.

At the heart of the Digimax 250 is the 2.1 megapixel CCD image sensor, which captures razor sharp images of the highest quality. These images can be stored on the camera's 6.0 MB of internal flash memory, or on an external SD/MMC card. In addition, the 250's MPEG-4 video compression offers superior quality images (320 x 240 maximum resolution at 15fps) and five times the recording capacity of MJPEG. In fact, video recording time is limited only by the capacity of the external memory card in use at the time. The Digimax 250 also features the world's first pause feature in movie clip mode, providing users with unprecedented directorial control over the video clips they capture.

Its combination mechanical and electrical shutter gives the 250 a top shutter speed of 1/2000 of a second. It can also capture long exposures up to two seconds, while its night scene mode extends the picture taking duration all the way up to eight seconds. In addition to allowing users to shoot at night, the 250 offers several additional scene modes including Auto "Myset" and Photoframe. The customizable "My Set" option allows the user to customize the camera's multitude of settings to meet their individual preferences or needs.

A sharp, precise, 5.0mm - 10.0mm f/2.8-4.8 lens (equivalent to 38mm-76mm in 35mm film format) gives the photo enthusiast a high quality picture in any situation. Its built in 2x digital zoom further extends the lens' capabilities, allowing photographers to zoom in tight on a subject from considerable distance.

A 1.5-inch TFT LCD screen acts as the nerve center of the 250, providing easy access to all of the camera's myriad features. The camera's compatibility with eight different power sources (AA Alkaline, Digimax I-Pack, NI-MH, CR-V3, Ni-Cd, 2 x Ni-Zn, 2 x Ni-Mn and AC adapter) ensures that power is something that will never be in short supply.

Thanks to preset shooting modes and custom effects, it's possible to adjust the camera to meet any photographic challenge. Three effect modes (normal, B&W & sepia,), seven white balance settings (auto, daylight, cloudy, sunset, fluorescent, tungsten & custom), and a variety of previously mentioned shooting modes make the Digimax 250 the perfect photographic companion for any situation.

Samsung knows that image capture is only the beginning of the digital process, and so provides everything the photographer needs to capture, store, output and share the products of their creative endeavors. For example, the Digimax 250 comes equipped with an external memory card slot that is compatible with SD/MMC cards and also comes bundled with MGI PhotoSuite and Digimax Viewer 2.1.
