The most basic of the models announced by Samsung today is the Digimax L60, a six megapixel camera with a 35 - 105mm equivalent 3x optical zoom lens.

As with the other Digimax, the L60 doesn't offer an optical viewfinder - instead favoring a larger than average 2.4" LCD display. ISO sensitivities range from 50 to 400, shutter speeds from 15 to 1/2000 second, images are stored on Secure Digital cards or in 32MB of internal memory, and there's both NTSC / PAL video and USB 2.0 computer connectivity. A generous selection of eleven scene modes should help beginners to get the most out of their pictures without having to learn the nuances of apertures and shutter speeds, and a Text Recognition mode allows images of books, papers and the like to be captured with the camera, and then the text automatically extracted using optical character recognition on your computer, courtesy of Digimax Reader software.

The Samsung Digimax L60 goes on sale in April, with pricing currently set at $299.99.

Original Source Press Release:

Samsung Camera Announces New, Stylish 6 Mega-Pixel Camera

New Digimax L60 Offers MPEG-4 Video, SHD Optics and Redesigned Body

Secaucus, NJ (February 23, 2006) –Samsung Camera announces the introduction of the new Digimax L60. Part of the Prestige line featuring sleek designs and user-friendly advanced features, the L60 features a 3x optical zoom SHD lens, a 5x digital zoom and a large, 2.4-inch color LCD display.

“The Prestige line is perfect for the step-up user who desires high-quality optics but with easy to use features,” says Stewart Henderson, National Marketing Manager at Samsung Opto Electronics. “And, after extensive market research we developed a sleek, ergonomic body design with features such as MPEG4 video recording in a compact package.”

The Digimax L60 offers MPEG-4, the high-compression, high quality video format that can record for up to 3-4 times longer than traditional video formats commonly used in other digital cameras. The L60 can record in VGA (640x480) at 30fps, for smoother video and a bigger view of the movie on LCD and TV screens. For steady recording, the built-in movie stabilization will automatically detect and correct lateral and vertical camera movement caused by the shooter’s unsteady hand. Users can also take advantage of the camera’s unique movie shooting functions, including a movie stabilizer, continuous video recording, improved in-camera video editing and the ability to use the 3x optical zoom while recording. Movie stabilizer helps reduce camera shake by automatic detection and correction of lateral and vertical camera vibrations, while continuous video recording allows the shooter to pause and resume video recording at any time and merge multiple video files into one single file. Users can also save a selected part of a movie clip into a new file during playback and capture a still image during video playback.

The L60 features several special effects functions for creative control in-camera, such as Color Effect, Highlight, Photo Frame, Negative and Composite Shot. Color effects include B/W, sepia, blue, green and red. For shooting fast-moving subjects, the L60 includes Continuous Shooting mode and Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB), a feature that will shoot a series of images with slightly varying exposures.

For crystal-clear images under various shooting conditions, the Digimax L60 features 11 scene modes including Night, Portrait, Children, Landscape, Close-up, Sunset, Backlight, Fireworks, Beach & Snow and Text Recognition. Text Recognition, a feature unique to Samsung digital still cameras, allows users to shoot documents such as books, papers and magazines and then extract text from the image taken using the bundled “Digimax Reader” text recognition software.

All Samsung digital still cameras feature a built-in image editing function allowing users to edit a variety of images without the use of a PC. The Trimming function can be used to cut an undesired part of an image and save only the required part. When short of memory, shooters can use the Resizing function to recover some of the memory space, by resizing and saving images in a smaller size. The Rotating function allows users to rotate an image in the desired direction and save it.

To ensure the clarity of images regardless of shooting range, the Auto Macro function automatically adjusts shooting distance and focus. By using the macro button, users can set the camera to automatically adjust distance and focus from between 5cm to infinity.

Equipped with 32MB of built-in memory, the L60 allows shooters to save pictures without a memory card, while the Copy to Card function allows users to seamlessly transfer images saved in the internal memory to external memory. The L60 allows includes helpful features such as voice recording for up to one-hour, voice memo and “One-touch Playback” for instant playback of an image, even when the power is off.

The Samsung Digimax L60 has an MSRP of $299.99 and will be available in April 2006.
