DSC-R1 has a couple of rather unusual features for an entry-level model...
Sanyo Japan has announced a new digital camera, the DSC-R1, our friends at Online Access Networks emailed to point out. The entry-level DSC-R1 features a fixed focal length lens and 1.36 megapixel CCD image sensor. There are a couple of things that set this camera apart though - one being the claimed battery life of up to 10,000 photos using a CR-V3 Lithium disposable battery. (Alkalines get a more modest 980 photos with LCD off, or 350 photos with LCD on).
Another unusual feature is the use of a frame-transfer CCD imager - something we've previously only seen on much more expensive cameras such as Pentax's EI-2000 and EI-3000. If you're not familiar with frame-transfer CCDs, they offer improved image quality because unlike a standard CCD which reads off the image row by row, a frame transfer CCD features a larger area into which it transfers the entire image off the sensor area in one go, allowing less time for charge to escape and the image to be adversely affected...
In Japan, the Sanyo DSC-R1 will ship in early November at a price of ¥33,000 (US$275). Full specifications for the camera are already in our database, and highlights follow:
