As predicted, FujiFilm adjusts the price of its upcoming digital SLR...
Fuji Photo Film USA Inc. has announced pricing of its FinePix S2 Pro digital camera to retailers, and as we predicted at the end of May, the figures look to be much closer to competing models from Nikon and Canon than they had been. Initially announced at a cost of $3495 list last March, the S2 Pro was unveiled in Japan last month with a list price of $2496. The camera will soon begin shipping from IR affiliate State Street Direct at an even lower cost of $2399 - a cut of almost $1100 from the originally announced US price.
If you're not familiar with the FinePix S2 Pro, which features a new third-generation 6.49 megapixel SuperCCD imager, a CCD-RAW file mode, SmartMedia / Type-I/II CompactFlash storage, and USB 1.1 / IEEE 1394 FireWire connectivity, read the official announcement released just before the PMA 2002 show last January.
The new pricing makes the S2 Pro much more competitive, albeit still a couple of hundred dollars more than Canon's EOS D60 which sells for $2199 ('Minimum Advertised Price' for the full kit). Rumors have suggested that Nikon's D100 will have a similar price to the EOS D60 when it ships, but arguably the S2 Pro can command a slight premium over both of these cameras thanks to the FireWire connectivity and dual-media capability.
If you want to purchase the Fuji FinePix S2 Pro, we highly recommend placing an order now - Canon's EOS D60 has been in tight supply since it shipped, and we'd expect the same to occur with the Fuji camera. You can order now from State Street, and secure your place on the list - you'll also be helping to support the Imaging Resource as well if you use our link! (Note that they're currently predicting the camera will ship on July 1st.)
UPDATED 2002-06-14 22:22ET:Ack! Thanks to Duaine Brenner for catching our error - yes, the S2 Pro is slated to ship July 1st, not June 1st. This year is flying by faster than we can keep up with it!
