Visioneer Announces PhotoPort TV 100 -- Instantly Share Your Digital Photos On TV Without a Computer; TV-Based Digital Imaging: the Next Wave of Intelligent Consumer Electronics

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 24, 2002--Visioneer, a leader in intelligent imaging solutions, today announced the Visioneer PhotoPort TV 100, a new TV-based digital photo appliance that allows users to easily, view, edit, share and personalize photo albums on their TV using pictures taken with a digital camera. The PhotoPort TV 100 product consists of an intelligent card viewer, wireless keyboard, remote control, power adapter and video cable for only $99.99. All the user needs is a memory card with digital images on it, and a TV. Visioneer will be publicly showing the product for the first time at
the DigitalFocus Expo tonight.

The Visioneer PhotoPort TV 100 brings the benefits of instant photography to digital camera users by allowing them to view, edit and share digital photos without the use of a personal computer. Simply connect the memory card viewer to the video-in connector on a TV, insert a SmartMedia or CompactFlash memory card containing photos, and use the wireless keyboard or remote control to create personalized photo albums with your pictures.

InfoTrends Research Group estimates that the U.S. photo-enabled set-top installed base will grow from less than 1 million units in 2002, to over 114 million units in 2006. Household penetration will climb from under 1% to around 85%.

"If you have ever owned or used a digital camera before, you know two things: One, taking a digital picture is quick and easy and two, sharing a digital photo album is not," said Murray L. Dennis, Visioneer President and CEO.

"The current solutions for creating digital photo albums are PC dependent. They are slow and require the user to go through many tedious steps to download photos into the PC, import the images into image editing software, edit the photos, add captions and create a simple slide show on your computer. PhotoPort TV 100 is the solution to this problem. Using your big screen TV, PhotoPort TV 100 is the 'instant photography' solution for digital cameras."

Full Function Wireless Keyboard

The PhotoPort TV 100 comes with a full-function wireless keyboard. The usual function keys, across the top and side of the keyboard, have been programmed for the most common image editing tasks. And all of these operations can be performed while the user sits comfortably across the room looking at a large screen. The user-friendly keyboard makes it easy to create, personalize and share an album using just a few keystrokes.

"Visioneer has been a digital imaging leader for years and has a reputation for making award-winning, easy-to-use solutions," said Dennis. "Visioneer OneTouch scanners made getting a photo into your computer as easy as pressing a single button. And now, we are making it just as easy for digital camera owners to instantly share their digital photos in the comfort of their living room. PhotoPort TV 100 unleashes you from your computer and frees your imagination."

Easy to Use

PhotoPort TV 100 comes with a Quick Start Guide making it easy for users to set up the product and begin viewing and editing their digital photos. On the main menu screen, users have the option to select "View Tour." This will walk them through a brief guided tour that highlights many of the easy and fun ways they can use PhotoPort TV 100 to create their own personalized photo albums. An extensive User Manual is also included.

Key Features of PhotoPort TV 100

The basic functionality of PhotoPort TV 100 enables users to easily and comfortably show their digital photos on their TV. The real fun comes from creating a personalized photo album and then sharing it with others. Here are some of the things you can do:

  • Add a caption
  • Add additional photos
  • Change the color of captions
  • Change the letter style (font)
  • Change the page background
  • Change the shape of a photo or caption
  • Change the size of a photo or caption
  • Crop a photo
  • Move a photo or caption
  • Rearrange the order of items
  • Remove an item
  • Rotate a photo
Advanced Features

Once users are comfortable adding captions, changing fonts, rotating photos, and more, they may wish to try additional functions. These include:
  • Adding and duplicating pages
  • Moving pages to a new position in your album
  • Removing pages completely
  • Adding title and end pages
Special Album Features

Finally, after creating an album exactly the way they want it, there are several things users can do with it.
  • Show it on TV
  • Videotape it
  • Copy albums to another memory card and send (snail mail) to someone else
Having Fun with PhotoPort TV 100

PhotoPort TV 100 can be used in many different ways. Here are just a few:
  • Show your vacation slide show to friends and family that weren't with you.
  • Send a memory card or videotape filled with albums to grandparents that live too far away to be able to share in their grandchildren's growing up. Include the school play, first recital, and soccer player of the year award ceremony.
  • Let it turn your TV into a slide projector at a party. Better yet, at the party take pictures of what's happening outside (now) and instantly show them to everyone inside.
  • As a business presentation tool. A real estate sales person can take interior and exterior photos of a house, build a customized presentation (complete with captions like room dimensions, etc.) and show it to a client that was too busy to attend the open house.
Help is Easy to Find

There are two kinds of 'Help' available when working with PhotoPort TV 100: Automatic Help and Online Help.
  • Automatic Help -- Help is available automatically when users select certain tasks. As a new user, it would be worthwhile to read these screens. Experienced users can turn off Automatic Help once they become comfortable using the keyboard.
  • Online Help -- Any time users are unsure of what to do on a screen, they simply press the Help key. They will instantly see information about the task they are performing at that moment. When editing a page they can also press Help + a key for information on what that key does.
Growth Of Digital Camera Market

The rapid growth of the digital camera category establishes it as one of the fastest growing categories in consumer electronics. US digital camera sales reached 6.9 million units in 2001, compared to 4.5 million units in 2000 and according to the Photo Marketing Association (PMA), Digital camera sales will likely grow at a fairly strong rate in 2002, with projected sales of 9.3 million units.

With the growth of the digital camera category comes a need for an easy way to view and share pictures. The camera's LCD screen is fine for determining if the picture should be retaken but leaves much desired as a photo-viewing screen. Downloading pictures to a personal computer is one option, but many consumers still avoid using the personal computer as an entertainment product because the current applications are difficult to use. Furthermore, computers are usually tucked away in a cramped home office and their relatively small
screens make it difficult for groups of people to see a photo album or slide show. Typical televisions have screens in excess of 27" and are usually located in the most comfortable room of the house, making it easy for people to gather around to view a PhotoPort TV 100 photo album.
