Up close with SanDisk's Digital Photo Viewer

We told you about SanDisk's new Digital Photo Viewer device on January 10th, but at the time we didn't have any photos of the unit.

Whilst we were on the CES show floor, though, we stopped by the CES booth to take a look for ourselves. A summary of the specs can be found in the previous news item, but in brief the SanDisk Digital Photo Viewer accepts CompactFlash, SmartMedia, MemoryStick, SD and MultiMediaCard memory, and allows you to view images up to 6 megapixels in JPEG format on your TV. A remote control unit lets you rotate, zoom, or select images - and delete them if you don't like them. You can also have the device play a slideshow of your images, which you can pause if you need a moment longer to view a particular image.

The interface and idea were simple and well executed from what we saw. The Digital Photo Viewer is similar to past devices from a variety of manufacturers, but is notable for its price point. Typically these set-top devices have either cost too much, or been able to handle only images on floppy disk or one flash card format. The SanDisk device offers compatibility with a wide range of cameras, and still keeps the cost down to a reasonable $79. If you're looking for a way to display images on TV without needing to hook up your camera and run down its batteries, this could be a very useful gadget!
