Regular Imaging Resource readers have known for a week that it was on the way, and now Fuji has made the S5000 digital camera official
Unusually, when the camera was first leaked by Fuji Israel last week, Mike hadn't heard anything from Fuji - and hence wasn't under a non-disclosure agreement and could comment. The leaked info was removed shortly afterwards, but IR readers already knew that the camera would have a 3.1 megapixel SuperCCD HR CCD imager giving a final image size of just under 6 megapixel interpolated (2816 x 2120 pixels), as well as an electronic viewfinder, 10x optical zoom lens, 2.2x digital zoom, xD-Picture Card storage, power from 4 AA batteries, and the ability to shoot images in RAW mode. We speculated at the time that the camera seemed to be a replacement for the S602 Zoom, but that turned out to be incorrect (although all the other specifications were spot-on). Instead, the FinePix S7000 will take the place above the S602 at the head of the line, whilst the S5000 will occupy a position somewhere in between the FinePix 3800 Zoom and the FinePix S602 Zoom. The camera is designed to have the point-n-shoot capabilities of the 3800 (in other words, offer a fully automatic mode that anybody can use without needing to learn how the camera works) - but also offer some of the more advanced exposure capabilities of the 602 that more advanced photographers need. The S5000 has a whopping 10x optical zoom, but unlike that in the S602 and S7000 which is f/2.8 across the zoom range, the S5000's lens stops down from f/2.8 to f/4 as you zoom in. The S602's 30 frames per second VGA video doesn't make it onto the S5000 either; instead the new model has a 30fps QVGA video mode. It also adopts the continuous autofocus mode and focus assist lamp from the FinePix F700 and the SuperCCD image sensor of the FinePix F410. The blue button that appeared on both those cameras, allowing immediate access to color, resolution and ISO settings, also appears on the S5000. The Fuji FinePix S5000 should ship in August at a price of $499. Full specifications and a press release follow...
