Kodak's DCS Pro 14n digital SLR. Courtesy of Eastman Kodak Co., with modifications by Michael R. Tomkins. Kodak expands 14n buffer size

Eastman Kodak Co. has begun shipping a version of the DCS Pro 14n digital camera that has a buffer size double that of the original version.

As we described when the camera was announced at Photokina last year, the DCS Pro 14n is service-upgradeable from a 256MB buffer to a 512MB buffer. Until now, customers who wanted the larger buffer size had to return their camera for upgrade at a Kodak service center - meaning time spent not taking photos whilst the camera was being upgraded.

Now, though, you can get the benefits of a larger buffer - greatly expanded burst shooting depth - from day one. Instead of the 1.7 frames per second burst mode topping out at 7 or 8 RAW files, owners of the 512MB version can expect 18 - 20 shots per burst.

256MB cameras can still be upgraded to 512MB by returning them to a service center (at a cost, of course - and this varies by country).

The press release also describes forthcoming updates to the camera's firmware (v4.4) and software (Photo Desk v3.2) that should bring a number of other improvements:

Kodak DCS Pro 14n firmware v4.4
  • Improved long exposure mode
  • In-camera selection of DCS Wedding or DCS Event color and contrast "Looks" (previously selectable only in Photo Desk v3.1 software)
  • Improved lens settings for many lenses
  • Automatic image review on rear LCD screen
  • LCD brightness slider for full control of the rear display (in addition to the current contrast slider)
Kodak DCS Photo Desk v3.2
  • RGB sliders that fine-tune the white balance in the image
  • Interactive histogram with white, black and midpoint controls
  • Ability to view in contact sheet mode
  • Higher-quality JPEG thumbnails for contact sheet mode
  • "Apply" buttons for white balance, noise reduction, sharpening, exposure compensation and exposure controls to enhance the "close-up view" mode compared to v3.1 software
  • Ability to "undo" the last image control change applied
