Casio yesterday announced a new digital camera model at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Casio QV-R51.

Featuring a 5 megapixel imager and 3x optical zoom lens, the QV-R51 is an attractive model that has been designed with a focus on battery life, speed and ease of use. Thanks to a newly designed (and extremely compact) LSI design, Casio is estimating up to 2.5 hours of use or 900 photos captured on a single charge. This battery life is all the more impressive when you consider that the camera features a large 2.0 inch LCD display for image preview / review, rather more generous than the 1.5 or 1.6-inch screens on most digicams. Casio also says the camera will start up in one second - quite fast for an extending-lens camera design - with a prefocused shutter lag of just 0.01 second (very close to the fastest on the market - Sony claims 0.009 seconds for the DSC-T1, a difference that is only likely to be noticed in lab testing!).

The Casio QV-R51 should be shipping in the next couple of weeks, with pricing set at $399.99.
