Nikon USA has announced two new Coolpix digicams with an interesting feature - a built-in fix for red-eye in photos through the camera's firmware.
The Nikon Coolpix 4200 and 5200 compact digital cameras are near-identical with the exception of their CCD imagers (4.0 and 5.1 megapixels, respectively) and their movie frame rates (15 and 30 frames per second, respectively). Both models share a 38 - 114mm equivalent Nikkor 3x optical zoom lens that incorporates ED (extra-low dispersion) glass and offers macro shooting to 1.6 inches.
Other features shared by the cameras includes an AF illuminator, built-in flash with red-eye reduction mode, Secure Digital storage slots, 12MB of internal memory, Video Out and PictBridge / DirectPrint-compatible USB connectivity, a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery with a life of up to 320 shots, and compatibility with Duracell's CP1 Prismatic disposable battery. Both models offer 15 scene modes, a new Panorama Assist mode, Best Shot Selector mode, in-camera image editing (cropping, date imprinting, etc.), and three movie modes (160, 320 and 640 pixels wide, with sound and no limit on clip length with the exception of available memory.)
The red-eye removal feature, which operates in firmware independantly of the built-in flash's red-eye reduction feature, is an interesting idea - and one we think more manufacturers will adopt as processors become cheaper and more powerful. It certainly makes sense (at least, in a consumer-level camera; users of pro-oriented cameras will want to be able to turn the feature on or off as they prefer!) to have corrections for things like red-eye, lens distortion, vignetting, etc. This small touch could save you needing to spend time editing your picture later, and make prints straight out of the camera a more attractive option...

The camera then analyzes the picture using powerful image processing and analysis technology. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix incorporates years of image processing and imaging analysis technology and know-how. The process is completely automatic and transparent to the users. The user will simply experience a reduction in the number of pictures with red eye. There are limitations to the feature as the system is optimized to the flash operating distance.
