A press release issued last week by Gateway Inc. calls attention to its DC-T50 digital camera, which received an award from Best Magazine at the recent Digital Focus press event held before this year's PMA show.

The Gateway DC-T50, which appears to be sourced from Taiwanese manufacturer Premier Camera, is a 5 megapixel model with a 3x optical zoom lens. Other manufacturers offer the model under their own brands - BenQ as the DC-C50, Minox as the DC 5211, Toshiba as the PDR-5300 and Vivitar as the ViviCam 3930, to name a few.

Gateway's press release neglects to mention that their camera shares the award in a tie with a model from another manufacturer. Nikon's Coolpix 4300 was also lauded by Best Magazine in the "Consumer Digital Camera" category alongside the Gateway DC-T50, in a two-way tie. Other awards were handed to Canon for the Digital Rebel ("Prosumer Digital Camera" category) and EOS-1Ds ("Professional Digital Camera" category). Sony and Panasonic tied in the "Digital Video Camera" category with their DCR-PC330 and VDR-M30 models respectively. Other winners in a variety of categories included the Epson Stylus Photo 2200 and HP Photosmart 7960 printers, HP ScanJet 4670 scanner, Adobe Photoshop CS imaging suite, and Ofoto photo-sharing website.

UPDATED 2004-06-01 17:27ET: IR reader Lenny Ellis wrote in to point out that Supra Foto Electronics of Germany also rebadge the same camera mentioned in this item, selling it as the Traveler DC-5300 in Europe (UK readers can apparently find the cameras in Aldi stores).

Gateway Named Best Consumer Digital Camera by Best Magazine

Five-Megapixel Model Beats Out Industry's Established Leaders

POWAY, Calif., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Continuing its successful advance into digital consumer electronics, Gateway today announced that its DC-T50 5.25 megapixel digital camera was named 2004's "Best Consumer Digital Camera" at the annual Best Magazine Awards.

The Best Magazine Awards were presented at the DigitalFocus(TM) 2004 event in Las Vegas prior to the Photo Marketing Association 2004 trade show. According to Best Magazine, the awards honor companies for their outstanding digital imaging products. The Gateway DC-T50 beat out such long-time industry heavyweights as Olympus, Kodak, Minolta, Fujifilm, HP and Pentax, who were all named finalists in the Consumer Digital Camera category.

"This continues to be an amazing year for digital imaging -- and Gateway's award is well deserved," said John Kelley, editor of Best Magazine. "The Gateway DC-T50 digital camera was chosen for its superb image quality, easy- to-use design and a groundbreaking price point for a fully-featured 5.25 megapixel camera."

Since it was launched in August of last year, the Gateway DC-T50 has received many awards and accolades from industry critics. At only $299.99 after $50 mail-in rebate(1), the 5.25 megapixel camera delivers image quality and a feature set typically reserved for more expensive cameras. The compact camera boasts an easy-to-use interface and sleek design weighing only 6.3-ounces, making it the ideal choice for consumers who want a camera that's convenient to take anywhere.

Matt Milne, Gateway's senior vice president and general manager of consumer solutions, stated, "We can deliver the latest technology at unprecedented prices due to the strength and efficiency of the Gateway business model. Best Magazine's award reinforces what consumers have already said -- the best place to get an easy-to-use, feature-rich digital camera is from Gateway."

The Gateway DC-T50 and many other digital cameras are available in stock at the more than 185 Gateway stores nationwide, by calling 1-800-GATEWAY, and online at Gateway.com . The digital cameras are supported by Gateway's standard limited warranties, and additional service and support options are available.(2)
