(Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 17:36 EDT)

French software company DO Labs has announced new updates for its DxO Optics Pro software that add support for Canon's EOS-1Ds digital SLR, aim to correct vignetting in images, and more.

For readers not familiar with DxO Optics Pro, you might want to read our in-depth coverage from shortly after it was announced at this year's PMA show in Las Vegas. In brief, though, DxO Optics Pro relies on carefully controlled analysis of camera bodies and lenses by DO Labs. The result is a set of camera body and lens correction modules, which can be used to correct softness, distortion, chromatic aberration, and vignetting in digital images using a particular combination of camera body and lens.

Alongside the announcements of the updates, DO Labs has also announced that Popular Photography & Imaging magazine has selected the software for use in its labs, alongside its existing suite of testing tools. Full details can be found in the press releases below.

Original Source Press Release:

NEW DXO OPTICS PRO VERSION 1.1 ADDS VIGNETTING CORRECTION, MULTILINGUAL INTERFACE AND WORKFLOW ENHANCEMENTS

Version 1.1 available as a free upgrade for all current users of version 1.0.

Paris, France, July 12th, 2004 – Do Labs, a software company focused on research in image processing to enhance image quality, announces the immediate availability of DxO Optics Pro version 1.1 for both Macintosh and Windows.

DxO Optics Pro version 1.1 adds several key features that greatly benefit demanding photographers shooting with Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras (D-SLRs). These new features reinforce DxO Optics Pro’s strength as a pivotal tool for digital photographers worldwide concerned with image quality and productivity.

DxO Optics Pro 1.1 enhancements fall into three categories:

  • Correction of Image Vignetting, or unwanted light fall-off from the center to the edges of an image, is now supported in the application.
  • Multilingual user-interface: English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish.
  • Productivity enhancement and fixes.

SOPHISTICATED IMAGE VIGNETTING CORRECTION:
DxO Optics Pro version 1.1 now supports the elimination of image Vignetting. Based on a precise mathematical model of the lens Vignetting and camera body Vignetting, this new feature is unlike any other Vignetting correction solution on the market:

  • Fully automatic: Vignetting removal is fully automatic and requires no operator intervention. There are no sliders, curves, or parameters to worry about, yet the results are of the highest quality.
  • Precise and reliable: DxO Optics Pro’s Vignetting removal technology takes into account all relevant parameters such as: lens aperture, focal length, non-linear sensor response, sensor size, etc. This ensures optimal correction for all imaging circumstances (low-light for example).
  • Fast and productive: Because of its automatic nature, DxO Optics Pro Vignetting removal can be processed in batch mode. This is true even if images were shot with different cameras and lenses so long as the appropriate DxO Correction Modules are available to the DxO Correction Engine. A complete image correction in DxO Optics Pro 1.1 (Vignetting plus Distortion, Blur and Lateral Chromatic Aberration) is a matter of only a few seconds, even for images from high-end DSLRs.

UPDATED DXO CORRECTION MODULES
In order to support Vignetting correction, current DxO Correction Modules have been updated. More than three quarters of existing DxO Correction Modules are available immediately with the Vignetting update. The rest of the DxO Correction Module lineup will be updated throughout the summer. A list of updated DxO Correction Modules is available on www.dxo.com. Going forward, all new DxO Correction Modules will include Vignetting correction.

MULTILINGUAL USER INTERFACE
Users of DxO Optics Pro 1.1 are now able to switch from one user interface language to another on the fly. DxO Optics Pro 1.1 includes English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish user interfaces thus considerably broadening its appeal in international markets.
