PRESS RELEASE: Better handling of large picture collections

ViewMinder Ltd has launched Version 2.0 of its digital image managers, Genus ViewMinder and Expert ViewMinder. The main enhancements are

  1. Optimized searches
Even in a collection of tens of thousands of images, searches produce results with no perceivable delay.
  2. Expandable timeline
As collections grow larger and older, timelines require ever more scrolling. Instead, ViewMinder now has an expandable yearline.
  3. Usage monitoring
When you export pictures, it's easy to record "who, where and why" information. Enthusiasts can see who has received their pictures. Professionals can tell which themes and pictures are the most popular.
  4. Author management
Keeps a record of who took what picture. Collections become much more interesting when all the family store their photos together. And companies can keep track of the work of different photographers.
  5. IPR
Exported images can be tagged with copyright information or conditions of use
  6. Latin
Version 1 already allowed names and descriptions to be written in multiple languages but the list was limited to living languages. Latin will allow precise labeling of scientific images, especially in the fields of medicine and biology.
Genus ViewMinder Version 2.0 is available free from CNet (download.com) and Tucows. The program never expires but picture collection size is limited to 250 pictures.

Expert ViewMinder Version 2.0 handles larger collections and can export metadata. It can be downloaded from http://www.viewminder.com for 64 euros ($81 at today's exchange rate), or 78 euros ($ 99) on a CD delivered anywhere in the world.

Owners of Version 1 can upgrade at no charge. Purchasers of Version 2 will receive all later enhancements to Version 2 at no charge.

The program consists of an image editor, a browser, a metadata editor and database, and a search engine. The browser can display pictures by date or by group. The metadata editor can record more detailed information about how and where the pictures were created and what they show.

Main specifications

Formats: Accepts and can convert between TIFF, PNG, JPG, BMP and WMF formats. Image file size up to 20 megapixels.

Importing: Reads EXIF (DCF) information if the image originates from digital camera.
Reads XML metadata if the source file was created by a compatible program.

Image editor: Displays, zooms, rotates, and crops. Adjusts and optimizes brightness.

Data editor: Catalogues by an extensive set of predefined fields. Unwanted fields can be disabled and then disappear from the interface. Recurring field data can be pre-set in templates.

Browse mode: Places pictures in user-defined groups. Browses by group or creation date.

Database: Stores metadata in a relational database. Images have an unlimited number of elements. Field length also unlimited.

Search mode: Simple searches scan the main fields for chosen words. Complex searches examine individual fields. Search rules can be saved, creating virtual albums that grow as pictures are added to the collection.

Languages: Unicode-based (Win XP and NT). Non-logical fields can be written in any language or in multiple languages.

File export: Images can be downsized manually or automatically. Picture descriptions (image metadata, plus author information) can be exported in XML format at the same time. When imported by another ViewMinder user, the
description is transferred simultaneously.
