Sanyo Japan has today updates its Xacti DMX-C series "cameracorder" lineup, with the announcement of the new DMX-C5 model.
The original DMX-C1 was described by the company as the smallest and lightest digital video camera with movie recording at VGA resolution or above when it was announced in 2003, and the new model shaves off a little thickness and weight for an even more compact package. To achieve this size and weight reduction, Sanyo has reduced the specification of the optical zoom lens from a 5.8x optical zoom to a slightly less bright 5x optical zoom. The new lens has 38 - 190mm equivalent focal lengths. Other changes include a new 5.1 megapixel (effective) CCD image sensor, and a slightly larger and much higher resolution 2.0" LCD display. The DMX-C5 still features Secure Digital card storage, and a 30 fps VGA MPEG-4 movie mode with a bit-rate of 3Mbps. Sanyo has retained the 2:1 interpolated maximum resolution first found in the DMX-C4, although realistically you could probably attain equal or better results performing the interpolation on a computer. The Sanyo Xacti DMX-C5 will ship in Japan from March 25th, with pricing set at ¥72,000 before tax (roughly equivalent to US$690, ignoring exchange rate fluctuations, taxes and duties).
