PRESS RELEASE: Wacom 6D Art Pen Provides Digital Artists A Natural Media Look And Feel
Adobe Creative Suite 2 Adds to the Mix by Giving Artists and Designers Exciting Creative Controls
Vancouver, WA, April 5, 2005 - Wacom® Technology Corporation, with the support of Adobe has successfully developed a 6D Art Pen that gives artists and designers six dimensions of pen control in Adobe® Photoshop® CS2 and Adobe® Illustrator® CS2, newly announced as part of the Adobe Creative Suite 2. Available immediately, the 6D Art Pen is supported on Wacom's Intuos3 pen tablets and new Cintiq 21UX interactive pen display. The pen has a suggested retail price of $69.95.
State-of-the-Art Pen The 6D Art Pen builds on Wacom's patented cordless, battery-free technology to offer artists and designers six dimensions of creative:
1. X-axis (left and right) 2. Y-axis (up and down) 3. Pressure (force with which pen is applied to tablet) 4. Tilt (angle at which pen is tilted) 5. Bearing (direction in which pen is tilted) 6. Barrel Rotation (orientation of the pen around its long axis)
"Artists and designers will appreciate the intuitive nature of the 6D Art Pen and its ability to easily control brush attributes with barrel rotation," said Mark Mehall, Senior Product Manager with Wacom Technology. "The sixth dimension of control provides a wonderful natural media experience in the digital environment."
Adobe Adds Intuitive, Creative Controls Wacom and Adobe combined hardware and software expertise to develop intuitive and creative controls for artists and designers using the 6D Art Pen. "Adobe Illustrator CS2 enables designers to rediscover the power of vector graphics through exciting new creative tools, such as Live Trace and Live Paint, and a new Control palette that makes it easier to select menus and features," said Mark Hilton, senior director of Creative Professional products at Adobe. "Our expanded brush selection allows designers to take advantage of Wacom's new 6D Art Pen dynamics, creating an environment where every digital stroke feels and looks as though you were working directly on paper."
Some of the leading software applications specifically designed to benefit from use with the 6D Art Pen are: Studio Artist by Synthetk, Body Paint by Maxon, and Studio and Symbolic Sound by Kyma. More graphics and design software companies intend to support the 6D Art Pen in the near future.
What the Experts are Saying Several well-known artists and industry leaders had the opportunity to use the 6D Art Pen and provide valuable feedback:
"The Wacom 6D Art Pen and Adobe Illustrator CS2 completely change the landscape of digital drawing. The results are remarkable - the control over rotation, stroke and pressure approaches the response of pen and brush with paper. It just feels right."
- Matthew Richmond, founding partner and creative director, The Chopping Block, an award-winning graphic design studio in New York City
"We've added extensive support for the new capabilities of the 6D Art Pen to our Studio Artist Paint Synthesizer. Pen rotation adds a new dimension of interactive control that is very intuitive for users to understand and operate. The 6D Art Pen is the most exciting new development in interactive control for computer generated art to appear in the last 10 years."
- John Dalton, President, Synthetk Software and creator of Studio Artist
