Nikon USA has now published its service advisory for the Coolpix SQ, Coolpix 3100, and Coolpix 5700 digital cameras, mirroring advisories from Nikon Europe and Japan which we pointed to yesterday.
NOTE: Since this item was published, we have compiled a new and more in depth source of information on this issue. Please consider visiting our article CCD Sensor Problems in Consumer Imaging Products as well as (or instead of) this item!
The Nikon USA service advisory notes that: "It has come to our attention that in a limited number of COOLPIX 3100, 5700 and SQ digital cameras, an electronic component may, in some instances, fail affecting your camera's performance and/or operability.
While only a limited number of COOLPIX 3100, 5700 and SQ digital cameras are affected by this advisory, if your camera presents symptoms that can include (1) images with a strong color tint, (2) images that are totally black and/or (3) images with visible defects, Nikon will, upon confirmation that the problem is associated to this Service Advisory, service your camera free of charge." Nikon is advising customers not to return their cameras unless they are inoperable, and to expect a five working day service time, plus shipping time. The company also states that customers who have already paid for this repair out of warranty should send a copy of the repair receipt with camera model and serial number, plus a cover note with return address, phone number and email address to:
Nikon Inc. Repair Accounts Receivable Department 1300 Walt Whitman Road Melville, NY 11747-3064
More details can be found on the service advisory page.
