The Samsung Digimax i5 digital camera is that company's first venture into the world of subcompact digicams, and it's a surprisingly impressive first showing.
It will certainly turn more than a few heads with its good looks and small size, and its 2.5-inch color LCD monitor adds to its allure. Though aimed at the point-and-shoot-oriented consumer interested in both style and portability, the i5 does offer a nice selection of features, from the 11 preset Scene modes to the availability of full manual exposure control in its Night mode. The 5.0-megapixel CCD captures high resolution images usable up to 11x17 inches (or 8x10 with cropping) but really sharp only to 8x10, and the 3x optical zoom lens covers the most common shooting uses.
We were pleasantly surprised by the print quality from the Samsung i5, the image noise we saw on-screen not being nearly as objectionable in the final prints, and colors appearing true, accurate, and appealing. We had a few quibbles with it, but on the whole, found this to be a very workmanlike subcompact digital camera, and an impressive showing by Samsung in the subcompact arena.
