ATP announces 8GB CF, SDHC cards

Just a touch over two weeks after Taiwanese company Pretec Electronics announced that it had set a record for the world's highest capacity in the Secure Digital format, the achievement has been equaled.
Sunnyvale, CA-based memory manufacturer ATP Electronics Inc. has today announced its own 8GB Secure Digital High Capacity card (alternately known as SDHC, or Secure Digital 2.0). Alongside the SDHC card announcement, ATP has also revealed a new 8GB CompactFlash card, although this is some way off the record of a 12GB CF card set by Pretec over two years ago. Pretec's card is an item that exists more as a technology flagship than a realistic product however, never having shipped in large volume or at an affordable price. Hence, ATP's new 8GB card equals the current maximum in that format from other manufacturers, if you only consider volume products.
As for the SDHC card, the original Secure Digital card specification has a limitation of a two gigabyte maximum capacity, but the SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) standard extends this to a theoretical 32GB. Hence, the new card can only be used in an SDHC-compliant device - few existing SD-based devices support SDHC, although recent product announcements show that the new standard is quickly being adopted.
SDHC also establishes classes that guarantee minimum sustained transfer rates of two, four or six megabytes per second. Burst transfer rates can be significantly higher, up to 20 megabytes per second. As with Pretec, ATP has yet to disclose the sustained transfer rate for the new 8GB SDHC card. Likewise, it hasn't disclosed performance of the new CompactFlash card.
Both cards will be shown at the fast-approaching Photokina tradeshow in Cologne, Germany, and will be available at retail in early October. Pricing has not yet been announced. As a final note, ATP states that both cards "follow the superb build quality tradition of all ATP products" including water and "extreme temperature" resistance.
