Canon USA has announced a price drop on its EOS Digital Rebel XT model that will put $100 back in the pockets of prospective customers.

Effective immediately, the Rebel XT is now available priced at $599.99 for the body-only kit, or $699.99 with a bundled EF-S 18-55mm lens. The adjustment in pricing sees the Rebel XT priced at just $100 above Nikon's just-announced D40 digital SLR, which is available only in 18-55mm kit form for US customers.

Announced back in February 2005, the Rebel XT is almost the same size and weight as Nikon's camera. The D40 is a six megapixel model with limited lens compatibility, three AF points, and a 2.5" LCD. By way of comparison, the Rebel XT has just a touch more resolution (eight megapixels), full EF and EF-S lens mount compatibility, seven-point autofocus, and a 1.8" LCD.

Full specs for the Rebel XT can be found in our coverage of last year's announcement.
