DxO Labs Logo. Click to visit the DxO Labs website! DXO: Some notes for Lightroom 1.1 users

Yesterday, we reported on two new software releases from San Jose CA-based Adobe Systems Inc. and DxO Labs of Boulogne, France.

Almost simultaneously, DxO launched version 4.5 of its DxO Optics Pro application, and Adobe took the wraps off version 1.1 of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

One of the key changes in DxO Optics Pro v4.5 is the addition of plug-in compatibility with Lightroom, making the French company the first third-party to offer a Lightroom plug-in - but development had been done with the publicly available Lightroom 1.0 version. In the following 24 hours the folks at DxO have been hard at work looking at how the changes in Lightroom 1.1 have affected compatibility with Optics Pro 4.5, and they've just published an update to their PDF document entitled "Working with DxO Optics Pro and Adobe Lightroom" that summarises their findings.

For the most part, it seems that Lightroom 1.1 and Optics Pro 4.5 play together nicely, although in a few places the order of options in certain dialogs has been changed. There is one incompatibility that bears noting, however. To quote from the DxO document:
"In Adobe® Lightroom™ v1.1, a new "Edit External File Naming" section is available underneath the "Additional External Editor" section in the screen capture above. It is of the greatest IMPORTANCE that you don't modify the Adobe® Lightroom™ default renaming scheme which is IMG_0002-Edit.PSD. In case it has been modified, you should
  • go into "Template/Edit..."
  • A "Filename Template Editor" window pops up.
  • Select "Custom" in the Preset dropdown menu
  • Overwrite any text in the blank area with the following string "{Filename»}-Edit". The last part of the string: "Edit", could be replaced with any other fixed string value: "DxO" for example, which would lead the entire string to become "{Filename»}-DxO".
  • Select "Save Current Settings as New Preset..."
  • Enter "DxO Optics Pro" as preset name and click "Create"
  • Click "Done" in the "Filename Template Editor" window
Other types of renaming schemes may prevent the DxO Optics Pro plug-in from performing the optical and volume anamorphosis corrections."
DxO's staff are apparently still working to identify and document any other changes in Lightroom v1.1 that are relevant to the Optics Pro v4.5 workflow. Hence we'd recommend users to cast an occasional eye on the PDF document hosted on DxO Labs' website, for any new details on the exact workflow changes that you might come across while using the DxO Optics Pro v4.5 plug-in with Lightroom 1.1...
