onOne announces free PhotoTools 2 Lite

onOne Software Inc. has announced a new free edition of PhotoTools 2, its photographic effects plug-in for Photoshop.

Almost all program features from the Standard and Professional editions are included in PhotoTools 2 Lite, with the sole differences being the number of effects included, and the removal of compatibility with Lightroom and Aperture. The Lite edition offers a subset of 14 popular effects from the paid editions of Phototools 2, and is compatible with Photoshop CS2, CS3 and CS4. Effects can be previewed with the "Before / After" view, layered together in stacks with control over the strength and opacity of each filter in the stack, and stacks saved as preset for later reuse. Batch processing of images is possible, and both layer and selective masking is possible for greater control. It is even possible to apply the effects to short video clips with Photoshop CS3 / CS4 Extended.

The 14 effects included in PhotoTools 2 Lite are:

Black Soft: Soft look, dark areas bleed into neighboring tones; increases color and contrast.
Bleach Bypass: Simulates processing of color film without bleaching; increases contrast and lowers saturation.
Boost Color: Increases saturation with user control over effect strength.
Chrome: Black and White conversion with rich blacks while retaining detail
Cross Process: Replicates darkroom cross processing via four user-selectable options.
Digital Fill Flash: Increases brightness of dark tones, simulating fill flash.
Golden Hour Enhancer: Adds warmth to images.
Graduated Blue: Makes skies bluer and less bright, and can be applied over 1/3, 1/2 or 2/3 of the image area.
Impression: Creates the look of an underdrawn impressionistic painting, with three options - normal, bright or dark.
Kodachrome: Simulates the effect of Kodak's popular film, with strong reds and a vivid, contrasty look.
Model Skin: Hides blemishes in skin tones will retaining the skin texture.
Super Sharpener: Designed to remove lens blur, sharpens only details and not color artifacts.
Turbo Boost: Increases color and mid-tone contrast.
Velvia: Simulates Fujifilm's popular film, with strong greens and a punchy, satured look.

Quite a range of useful effects, and you really can't beat the fact that it is free of charge! Examples of the effects can be seen on onOne's website.

The Standard edition includes another 167 effects from onOne and Jack Davis, and the Professional edition adds compatibility with Lightroom and Aperture, plus a further 50 effects from Jack Davis, and 62 effects from Kevin Kubota.
