Nikon Inc. has today announced four new digital cameras, including the Coolpix S1000pj - the first compact digicam to feature a built-in projector - as well as the Coolpix S70, Coolpix S640 and Coolpix S570.
All four cameras go on sale from this September, and a variety of body colors will be offered for all but one model. First up is the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj, priced at around $430. The S1000pj's 0.9-inch thick body includes not only the combination of a twelve megapixel CCD image sensor with a Nikkor-branded optically stabilized 5x zoom lens with 28mm wide angle, as well as a 2.7-inch LCD display, but also manages to cram in a VGA-resolution projector module. The Nikon S1000pj comes with a stand that holds it steady, and the camera itself can project images and movie clips onto any flat surface from a distance of ten inches to 6.5 feet. Depending on the distance at which it is placed, the image diagonal beamed by the Coolpix S1000pj varies from five to 40 inches. A remote control is included, and the Nikon S1000pj's projector has an output of ten lumens with a 30:1 contrast ratio. Battery life when using the S1000pj's projector is said to be in the region of one hour. The Nikon Coolpix S1000pj stores images and videos in 36MB of built-in memory or on Secure Digital media, and draws power from a proprietary Lithium Ion battery. The Nikon S1000pj will be available in matte black body color only. More details can be found in our Nikon S1000pj preview. The S70 is just slightly slimmer at 0.8 inches, and again couples a twelve megapixel CCD image sensor to a Nikkor-branded 5x optical zoom lens with 28mm wide angle. Instead of an LCD display, the Coolpix S70 includes a 288,000-dot 3.5-inch Organic LED display. Not only is the Nikon S70's screen roomy and fairly high-res, but it also includes an electrostatic capacitative touch screen with multi-touch capability. Similarly to Apple's popular iPhone, this allows for an intuitive two-fingered control of things like paging between images, zooming, etc., and even allows the focus / metering point to be indicated and the shutter to be triggered by simply touching the subject. The Nikon S70's display has a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, and the camera includes both optical and digital image stabilization. In a first for a Nikon Coolpix camera, the S70 also offers a high-definition 720p, 30 frames-per-second movie mode, although there's no high-definition video connectivity on the camera body. The Nikon Coolpix S70 stores images and videos in 20MB of built-in memory or on Secure Digital media, and draws power from a proprietary Lithium Ion battery. The Nikon S70 has a dual-textured front panel, and will be available in black, red, or champagne with either beige or light brown accent panel. More details can be found in our Nikon S70 preview. The S640 is just as slim as the S70 at 0.8 inches thick, but slightly smaller in both height and width. The Coolpix S640 again couples a twelve megapixel CCD image sensor to a Nikkor-branded optically-stabilized 5x zoom lens with 28mm wide angle. The Nikon S640's display is a more run-of-the-mill 2.7-inch LCD with 230,000 dot resolution. The Nikon S640's selling points is its speed, with Nikon claiming its 0.7-second startup time as the fastest of any 5x zoom compact camera featuring optical image stabilization. The S640 should also yield the fastest autofocusing in a Coolpix camera, with a 0.39 second shutter lag. The Nikon Coolpix S640 replaces the S620 in the company's lineup, stores images and videos in 45MB of built-in memory or on Secure Digital media, and draws power from a proprietary Lithium Ion battery. The Nikon S640 will be sold in four body colors - "Calm Black", "Velour Red", "Precious Pink" and "Pearl White". More details can be found in our Nikon S640 preview. Nikon Coolpix S640 | | General | Camera Type | Ultra Compact | Manufacturer | Nikon | Model Number | S640 | Dimensions | 3.6 x 2.2 x 0.8 in. (91 x 55 x 21 mm) | Weight | 3.9 oz (110 g) | Planned Price | $249.95 | Planned Availability | September 2009 | Image Capture | Sensor Type | CCD 12.00 megapixels (effective) | Aspect Ratio | 4:3 | Image Dimensions | 12.0 megapixels
| Image Preview / Review | Viewfinder | No | LCD | 2.7", 230,000 pixels | Lens | Lens Type | Nikkor lens 5x optical zoom | Image Stabilization | Yes | Focal Length | 5.0 - 25.0mm (actual) 28 - 140mm (35mm equivalent) | Aperture Range | f/2.7 (wide) / f/6.6 (tele) - ??? | Focusing System | Contrast Detection with Face-Priority AF | Focusing Range | Normal: 18" - infinity (45 cm - infinity) Macro: 0.8" - 4,082" (2 cm - 10,000 cm) | Exposure | ISO Sensitivity | Auto (100 - 1600) 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 | Creative | Scene Modes | 16 Scene Modes | Digital Zoom | Up to 4x | Storage | Recording Medium | SD/MMC, Built-in | File System | FAT16, FAT32 | File Format | JPEG | Connectivity | Video | Yes, NTSC / PAL switchable | Computer | USB 2.0 Full (LOW) Speed | Other | DC Input | Power | Battery Type | Lithium-ion rechargeable | Battery Form Factor | Proprietary EN-EL12 | Product Bundle | Battery / Charger | 1 x Proprietary EN-EL12 Lithium-ion rechargeable battery and charger | Flash Memory | 45.0MB built-in memory | Other | Internal Microphone | Yes | Internal Speaker | Yes | Tripod Mount | Yes | More Photos | | | | | | Finally, the Nikon Coolpix S570 has an approximate pricetag of just $200. Like all the other cameras in today's announcement, the S570 couples a twelve megapixel CCD image sensor to a Nikkor-branded 5x optical zoom lens with 28mm wide angle. The Coolpix S570 saves a little cost and complexity by dropping the optical image stabilization from the package, however. The S570 replaces the mechanical stabilization with Nkon's digital image stabilization functionality. The Nikon S570's display is a 2.7-inch LCD with 230,000 dot resolution, and its body size is nearly identical to that of the S640. The Nikon S570's body is just a little heavier than the S640 however, at about 4.2 ounces versus 3.9 ounces. The Nikon Coolpix S570 replaces the S560 in the company's lineup, stores images and videos in 47MB of built-in memory or on Secure Digital media, and draws power from a proprietary Lithium Ion battery. The Nikon S570 will be available in black, red, blue and pink. More details can be found in our Nikon S570 preview.
