Aimed at professionals, Wi-Pics Mobile is a PocketPC-based solution that helps photographers manage images as they're captured. The PDA is connected via a USB tether to a digital SLR, and either Raw or JPEG files can then be offloaded to a CompactFlash or Secure Digital memory card in the PDA as they're captured. Wi-Pics can automatically rename the files, and tag JPEGs with metadata. With the appropriate (optional) hardware, this metadata can include information from a barcode scanner or magnetic stripe card reader. Once transferred and tagged, the images can then be automatically transferred via 802.11b / g wireless LAN using FTP or UNC protocols.
The new release of Wi-Pics Mobile adds the ability to lock out all command functions so as to prevent tampering with configuration, and also adds support for barcodes with as little as four characters using an optional barcode reader. As of the current version the full list of digital SLRs supported by Wi-Pics Mobile is as follows:
Alongside the software update, United Imaging has also announced a new quick-draw hip mount for Wi-Pics Mobile users. More details can be found on the Wi-Pics Mobile website.
