Canon has today announced six new PowerShot digital cameras - the G11, S90, SX20 IS, SD980 IS, SD940 IS and SX120 IS.
Canon has today announced six new PowerShot digital cameras - the G11, S90, SX20 IS, SD980 IS, SD940 IS and SX120 IS. The Canon PowerShot G11 retains similar styling to the PowerShot G10, but takes an important step in the direction of sanity by reducing the sensor resolution from 14.7 to 10.0 megapixels. This should help the Canon G11 offer improved dynamic range, reduced image noise and better low-light performance. The G11 also features a 2.8-inch tilt/swivel LCD display in place of the G10's 3.0-inch fixed panel, raises the flash sync speed to 1/2000 second, and adds high-definition HDMI output connectivity. The PowerShot G11 is slated to ship in the USA from October 2009. Pricing for the G11 has been set at $500 - the same pricepoint at which the G10 launched last year. For more details, read our Canon G11 preview. Canon PowerShot G11 | | General | Camera Type | Mid-Sized | Manufacturer | Canon | Model Number | G11 | Dimensions | 4.4 x 3.0 x 1.9 in. The Canon SX20 boosts the SX10's resolution just slightly from ten to twelve megapixels, which equates to an increase in linear resolution of just under 10%. The PowerShot SX20 also offers slightly increased flash range when the ISO sensitivity is under automatic control, with a maximum reach of 22 feet at wide angle, or 12 feet at telephoto. The most significant change in the Canon PowerShot SX20IS is the addition of high-definition movie capability. Where the SX10 could only record videos at VGA resolution or below, the PowerShot SX20IS can capture 720p (1280 x 720 pixels) clips. The H.264 MOV compression and stereo microphone from the SX10 is retained in the SX20 IS. To take advantage of the higher movie resolution, the Canon SX20 IS also adds an HDMI high-def video output. In other respects, the Canon PowerShot SX20 is essentially identical to its predecessor, including a 20x optical zoom with stabilization and 28mm wide angle, 2.5-inch LCD display, SD / SDHC storage, and power from four AA batteries with alkaline disposables in the product bundle. The PowerShot SX20 IS will ship from September 2009. Pricing for the SX20IS has been set at $400. For more details, read our Canon SX20 preview. A few years ago when we interviewed Yasushi Shiotani, designer of the iconic ELPH APS film camera, we were told that the company had avoided touch-panels because of useability issues. While they do attract attention, they also attract fingerprints and limit the size of the interface to that of the panel itself. The closest Canon had come to a touch-screen in past models would be the PowerShot SD790, a camera that placed a touch-sensitive panel adjacent to the (touchless) LCD display. The Canon SD980 has a sensor resolution of twelve megapixels from a 1/2.3" CCD image sensor. The PowerShot SD980's stabilized 5x optical zoom lens offers 35mm-equivalent focal lengths from a healthy 24mm wide angle to a 120mm telephoto. The Canon PowerShot SD980's lens can focus as close as two inches (5 cm) in macro mode. The SD980's maximum aperture varies from f/2.8 to f/5.9 across the zoom range. The Canon PowerShot SD980 IS doesn't offer manual or aperture / shutter priority modes, opting instead for a Program auto mode and a variety of scene modes. The Canon PowerShot SD980IS can capture 720p (1280 x 720 pixels) video clips with monaural sound, using H.264 MOV compression. The SD980 IS stores its images and video clips on SD or SDHC cards, and draws power from a proprietary NB-6L Lithiium Ion rechargeable battery. The Canon SD980 IS includes HDMI high-def and NTSC / PAL standard-def video output, and USB 2.0 High-Speed connectivity. Like most of the cameras in this announcement, the PowerShot SD980 IS will ship from October 2009. Pricing for the SD980IS has been set at $330. For more details, read our Canon SD980 preview. The Canon SD940 likewise has a sensor resolution of twelve megapixels from a 1/2.3" CCD image sensor. The PowerShot SD940 replaces the SD980's lens with a stabilized 4x optical zoom lens that offers a less generous range at both ends - a 28mm wide angle to a 112mm telephoto. The Canon PowerShot SD940's lens can focus as close as 1.2 inches (3 cm) in macro mode. The SD940's maximum aperture varies from f/2.8 to f/5.9 across the zoom range. The touch-screen is absent, replaced by a standard 2.7-inch LCD display. The Canon PowerShot SD940 IS doesn't offer manual or aperture / shutter priority modes, opting instead for a Program auto mode and a variety of scene modes. The Canon PowerShot SD940IS can capture 720p (1280 x 720 pixels) video clips with monaural sound, using H.264 MOV compression. The SD940 IS stores its images and video clips on SD or SDHC cards, and draws power from a proprietary NB-4L Lithiium Ion rechargeable battery. The Canon SD940 IS includes HDMI high-def and NTSC / PAL standard-def video output, and USB 2.0 High-Speed connectivity. The PowerShot SD940 IS will ship from September 2009. Pricing for the SD940IS has been set at $300. For more details, read our Canon SD940 preview. Available in Blue, Black, Silver and Brown. | More Photos | | | | | | Finally, the Canon PowerShot SX120 IS is the lowest-cost of the group, and a followup to last year's SX110 model. Changes in the SX120 compared to the previous model are subtle. Both cameras share a near-identical body design, with the only obvious difference beyond the product branding being the removal of the print button. The Canon SX120 boosts the sensor resolution ever so slightly from nine to ten megapixels, which equates to an increase in linear resolution of around 5%. The PowerShot SX120 also offers slightly increased flash range when the ISO sensitivity is under automatic control, with a maximum reach of 13 feet at wide angle, or 8.2 feet at telephoto. The most significant change is to be found on the inside, with the Canon PowerShot SX120IS's image processor upgraded from DIGIC III to DIGIC 4, the current version which started shipping in PowerShots a year ago. Digic 4 offers improved face detection in the PowerShot SX120IS. It should also offer the SX120 IS some improvements in the areas of image noise, autofocus and autoexposure. The Canon SX120 IS also now offers Canon's i-Contrast technology thanks to the newer DIGIC chip. The bundled SD card has also been increased in capacity from a throw-away 32MB card to a 128MB card that should fit perhaps thirty full-res photos at the lowest compression. In other respects, the Canon PowerShot SX120 is essentially identical to its predecessor, including a 10x optical zoom with stabilization with a rather tight 36mm wide angle, a 3.0-inch LCD display, SD / SDHC storage, and power from two AA batteries with alkaline disposables in the product bundle. The PowerShot SX120 IS will ship from September 2009. Pricing for the SX120IS has been set at $250. For more details, read our Canon SX120 preview. Original Source Press Release:
Canon U.S.A. Announces Additions To Its Award-Winning Line Of Powershot Digital Cameras Experience the First-Ever Touch Screen PowerShot Camera; Celebrate the Resurgence of the S-Series Digital Camera Line; Capture a Memorable Shot with the New High Sensitivity System Lake Success, N.Y., August 19, 2009 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announced six new PowerShot cameras offering diverse photographic options for users who have just begun their photographic journey or have been mastering their skills for many years. The new camera line-up delivers the unique features users want, with the superb image quality, ease-of-use and stylish design they have come to expect from Canon. Whether a professional photographer looking for a smaller camera to tote along on assignment or a snap-happy sports fan heading to the big game, the new PowerShot digital cameras give users options for upgrading their shooting experience. All of the new cameras feature Optical Image Stabilization and use the DIGIC 4 Image Processor, the proprietary technology that accounts for the cameras' higher performance levels, improved signal processing speeds and enhanced image quality. Smart AUTO technology can now track moving faces and 22 different shooting situations (up from 18 previously) by identifying the surroundings to help ensure proper lighting and focus, providing the confidence to deliver high-quality photos in virtually any situation, from group snapshots, to landscapes, to portraits and more. Select new PowerShot models will have the ability to shoot 720p High-Definition (HD) video, utilize the PureColor System LCD and for the first time from Canon, a PowerShot Digital ELPH camera will have a touch screen user interface for easy navigation through images and menus. The desire to capture a clear shot of a sunrise or sunset over a mountain range can be fulfilled by using powerful features such as the brand new 10.0-Megapixel High Sensitivity System found on two of the new higher-end PowerShot cameras, the PowerShot G11 and PowerShot S90. Proven to enhance image quality in low-light situations and reduce noise at high ISO speeds, the new High Sensitivity System which is combined with the DIGIC 4 image processor, results in a faster shutter speed to help reduce subject blur and camera shake in recorded images. When it's not possible to use the flash at an event such as a wedding or a dance recital, this High Sensitivity System will help ensure images look great while making the user the envy of all in attendance. "With the introduction of these new PowerShot cameras, consumers will have a wide array of choices when looking to upgrade and enhance their photography experience," said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. "Professional and entry-level users alike will now have the opportunity to choose the camera which best suits both their photographic and personal style at the same time." Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera The PowerShot G-series has long been the flagship of the PowerShot line.
