‘Our World: Awe-Inspiring Images’ demonstrates DP2 camera’s outstanding image quality

Sigma Corporation of America, a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world’s most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, has highlighted the exceptional work of four elite photographers - Chip Forelli, Paula Lerner, Stephen Mallon and Sean Perry - in its online photo gallery, “Our World: Awe-Inspiring Images.”

These four photographers were introduced to the Sigma DP2, a 14-mega pixel, high-definition, digital, compact camera, and, in less than three weeks, were encouraged to produce images that pay tribute to the camera’s outstanding image quality. The astounding results, which were first revealed at an in-booth cocktail hour at PhotoPlus Expo 2009, are currently available on the company’s Web site for public viewing.

“The camera has an elegant response to light, a tangible, organic quality that speaks in its own voice," said award-winning photographer, Sean Perry, who is based out of both Austin, Texas, and New York City. “My work is about communicating the sentience and atmosphere of a thing beyond its physical form; the Sigma DP2 provides the technology to express images completely and beautifully.”

The four photographers were selected based on their subject preferences, such as landscape, industrial and architectural photography, which are complementary to the DP2’s specially-designed 24.2mm F2.8 large aperture lens. Photographer Lerner worked outside of the lens’ typical use and opted to shoot a set of portraits with the DP2 to showcase the camera’s breadth. The other element that factored into Sigma’s selection of these shooters was the choice to approach professional photographers who had never worked with the DP2 or a camera containing its Foveon X3 direct image sensor.

“I’d heard of Sigma’s DP2 camera, but I’d never gotten my hands on one before this opportunity arose,” said Chip Forelli, an internationally renowned and award-winning photographer based out of greater New York City area. “I was genuinely impressed with the sharpness and detail in the images I captured. I shoot with film, so this really took me out of my element and it was a tremendously pleasing experience.”

The Sigma DP2 is part of the DP series of cameras which includes the DP1 and the newly released DP1s. The DP1s has the same processor, 14-mega pixel Foveon X3 direct image sensor and 16.6mm F4 lens as the DP1, yet includes enhancements made to its user interface and to the camera’s performance when shooting backlit subjects. The unique technology in these cameras make them unique tools for photographers who are focused on image quality and who enjoy the creativity involved in capturing and editing RAW images.
