Nikon Inc. has today announced two new digital cameras that refresh existing models -- the Coolpix S1100pj replacing the S1000pj, and the Coolpix S5100 updating the S570.
The Nikon Coolpix S1100pj is Nikon's second camera to include a built-in projector. Compared to its predecessor, the S1100pj's projector has increased brightness, allowing greater range (and hence a larger projected image) at like brightness. The Nikon S1100pj also boosts sensor resolution slightly, from twelve to fourteen megapixels, while retaining the same Nikkor-branded optically stabilized 5x zoom lens with 28mm wide angle. Another upgrade can be found in the Coolpix S1100pj's new3.0-inch LCD display, which features increased size and resolution compared to that of the previous camera. It also features a touch panel, allowing the Nikon S1100pj's LCD to be used as an input device. Making better use of the built-in projector module, the Nikon S1100pj now includes a built-in stand, rather than requiring an extra component that's liable to be left at home. The S1100pj's maximum full-resolution sensitivity has been boosted to ISO 3,200 equivalent. Also new is the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj's 720p high definition movie mode, made possible by an updated EXPEED C2 image processor. The Nikon S1100pj ships from September 2010, priced at US$350, and with a selection of four body colors. More details can be found in our Nikon S1100pj preview. The Nikon Coolpix S5100, meanwhile, adds two more body colors than its predecessor, for a total selection of six. The S5100 also uses the latest EXPEED C2 image processor, allowing high-def 720p video at 30 frames per second. The Coolpix S5100 couples a twelve megapixel CCD image sensor to a Nikkor-branded 5x optical zoom lens with 28mm wide angle. Unlike its predecessor, the S5100 includes true optical image stabilization, an important upgrade for shooting in less than ideal lighting. Another new feature of the Nikon S5100 is its auto tripod detection capability, which allows it to determine whether each shot is handheld or tripod mounted, and then adjust the shutter speed and ISO sensitivity appropriately. The Nikon S5100 includes a 2.7-inch LCD with 230,000 dot resolution, and has a maximum full-resolution ISO sensitivity of 3,200 equivalent. The Nikon S5100 ships from October 2010, priced at US$180. More details can be found in our Nikon S5100 preview. Nikon Coolpix S5100 | | General | Camera Type | Ultra Compact | Manufacturer | Nikon | Model Number | North America: S5100
