Sanyo PD1, PD2: Full HD dual cameras announced

Sanyo has announced two new Xacti Dual Camera models for the US and European continents that, if not the same product under different names, are at the least very closely related.

The US-model Sanyo Xacti VPC-PD2 was first to be announced a couple of weeks ago, although we didn't catch the press release at the time. The European equivalent, the Sanyo Xacti VPC-PD1, followed up with an announcement from the company's European headquarters in Munich, Germany yesterday.

Both cameras are externally identical, and are described as offering ten megapixel still images, as well as 30 frames-per-second Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixel) high definition video with stereo sound. No details on the sensor size and resolution are provided, but it sits behind a 3x optical zoom lens with a rather tight 37mm-equivalent wide angle. Images and videos are framed and reviewed on a smaller than average 2.0-inch LCD display. Data is stored on SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards, and output options include high-def HDMI video, and an integrated USB jack with charging capability. Power comes from a proprietary lithium-ion battery pack.

In the US market, the Sanyo Xacti PD2 ships this month, priced at around US$170. The European-market Sanyo Xacti PD1 also ships this month, priced at around €170.

SANYO Introduces Pocket-Size Dual Camera

Capturing 10MP Photos and Full HD Videos with 3x Optical Zoom

August 19, 2010 -- Chatsworth, CA, August 19, 2010 – SANYO North America Corporation (SANYO), the company that introduced the first true line of Dual Cameras capable of taking high quality photos and videos from one single unit, today introduces a new Full HD (1920 x 1080 30p) Pocket-Size Dual Camera, model VPC-PD2BK, with embedded software for easy use and sharing on social networks. The camera is the only one of its kind that offers Full HD video recording, 10 MP photo shooting, and 3x optical zoom in a stylish form factor that is about the size of a deck of cards. The camera will be available for purchase in September with an MSRP of $169.99.

The new pocket-size dual camera makes it a snap to shoot, connect, view and share both photos and videos on social networks like YouTube, Facebook, and Picasa. Two microphones on the sides of the camera record stereo sound.

The SANYO VPC-PD2BK has a High Speed Sequential Shooting Mode usually found on more expensive or larger cameras. Connect using USB with either a built-in USB connector or with the included USB connection cable.

Files can be saved to SD, SDHC or ultra-high capacity SDXC (up to 64GB) memory cards.
