Leica Camera AG has today announced its new V-LUX 2 digital camera, based on Panasonic's Lumix FZ100 model.
The Leica V-LUX 2 couples a 14.1 megapixel CMOS image sensor to a Leica DC Vario-Elmarit-branded 24x optical zoom lens. The V-LUX 2's lens has a useful 25mm wide angle, and a maximum aperture of f/2.8 to f/5.2 across the zoom range, and includes optical image stabilization. For framing and reviewing images, the Leica V-LUX 2 has both a 0.2-inch electronic viewfinder, and an articulated 3.0-inch LCD display, each with 100% coverage. The standout feature of the Leica V-LUX 2 is its incredibly swift 11fps full-resolution burst mode, using a mechanical shutter. Reducing the V-LUX 2's resolution to 3.5 megapixels allows even faster 60 frames-per-second shooting. The Leica V-LUX 2 stores its data in 40MB of built-in memory, or on Secure Digital cards. Connectivity options include USB, standard-def NTSC / PAL video output, and high-def HDMI video output. Power comes from a 7.2V, 895mAh proprietary lithium-ion battery. One important difference from the Panasonic variant of the camera is that Leica's software bundle includes Adobe Photoshop Elements for still image editing, and Adobe Premiere Elements for video editing. The Leica V-LUX 2 ships in October 2010, priced at $850, around $350 more than list pricing for the Panasonic camera. Our Leica V-LUX 2 review contains details on this camera.
