Development of camera first announced in Japan now 'official' in the USA...

Olympus USA has today officially announced the development of a new SLR digital camera design featuring interchangeable lenses and a 4/3" CCD. We first told you about this development last Friday, and added comments from Olympus USA shortly thereafter.

Today's announcement continues in the vein of those comments, confirming that the camera is indeed under development but noting that the project is still in the very early stages and the camera's "feature set, specifications, introductory date and pricing remain undetermined at this time".

Rumored specifications according to our initial source for the item, >digitalcamera.gr.jp's Yamada Kumio, include magneto-optical mass storage and Bluetooth wireless communications along with accessories such as a long life power-pack, hand grip, and macro and viewer attachments. The camera design is believed to be based on Kodak's 4/3" 5.1 megapixel KAF-5100CE image sensor.

New Technology to Set Industry Standard for Digital SLRs

Melville, NY, May 1, 2001 — Olympus America Inc. announced today that its parent, Olympus Optical Co. Ltd. Of Tokyo, Japan, the world leader in film and filmless photography, has initiated an R&D project to develop a multiple lens digital SLR concept camera using a new 4/3" CCD.

Still in the early concept stages of project development, the camera utilizes a new 4/3" image sensor that delivers roughly four times the image area of a 2/3" CCD. Olympus is very excited about the potential of this technology, however company officials stress the developmental nature of this product and system.
