Camera Modes & Menus

Record Mode: Accessed by turning the mode dial to the red camera symbol, this signals the lens to extend out into its operating position and sets up the camera for recording images. Two exposure modes are available here: Automatic and Manual (selected through the Record menu).

Automatic Exposure Mode: This mode puts the camera in charge of all exposure decisions with the exception of flash mode. Pressing the Menu button pulls up the following menu options:
  • Macro Mode: turns the macro mode on or off.
  • Self-Timer: turns the 10 second self-timer mode on or off.
  • Mode: sets the exposure mode to the following:
    • Automatic: puts the camera in charge of all exposure decisions except flash, image size and quality.
    • Manual: the camera controls aperture and shutter speed while you control flash, exposure compensation, white balance, file size and image quality.

    • Setup: calls up the following Setup menu:
      • Back: backs out of the Setup menu.
      • Quality: sets the image quality to Fine, Normal or Basic.
      • File Size: sets the image file size to 1280 x 960 or 640 x 480.
      • Frame Number: renews or continues the frame numbering with each new SmartMedia card.
      • Beep: sets the camera beep to High, Low or Off.
      • Date/Time Set: sets the camera's internal date and time.


Manual Exposure Mode: This mode leaves the camera in control of aperture and shutter speed, while you control other exposure variables such as white balance and exposure compensation. Pressing the Menu button calls up the following menu options:

  • Macro Mode: turns the macro mode on or off.
  • Exposure Compensation: sets the exposure compensation in 1/3 EV increments from -0.9 to +1.5 EV.
  • White Balance: sets the white balance to Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Daylight Fluorescent, Warm White Fluorescent, Cool White Fluorescent or Incandescent to match a variety of light sources.
  • Mode: sets the exposure mode to the following:
    • Automatic: puts the camera in charge of exposure decisions except flash, image size and quality.
    • Manual: the camera controls aperture and shutter speed while you control flash, exposure compensation, white balance, file size and image quality.
    • Setup: accesses the following Setup menu:
      • Back: backs out of the Setup menu.
      • Quality: sets the image quality at Fine, Normal or Basic.
      • File Size: sets the image file size to 1280 x 960 or 640 x 480.
      • Frame Number: renews or continues the frame numbering with each new SmartMedia card.
      • Beep: sets the camera beep to High, Low or Off.
      • Date/Time Set: sets the camera's internal date and time.


Playback Mode: Accessed by turning the mode dial to the green playback symbol, this mode allows you to review captured images, delete or protect them, or set them up for printing. Pressing the Menu button in this mode activates the Playback menu with the following options:

  • Erase: deletes a single frame or all images, also has an option to format the SmartMedia card.

  • Protect: protects individual or all images from accidental erasure, also has an option for unprotecting all.

  • Resize: resizes images from 1280 to 640, 1280 to 320 or 640 to 320 (depending on the size of the recorded image).

  • DPOF (Digital Print Order Format): sets up images for printing with the following options:
    • Cancel All: cancels print setup for all images.
    • Set All: sets all images to be printed.
    • Review/Cancel: allows you to review image print settings and/or cancel them.
    • Frame: sets up printing for an individual frame.
    • Trimming: allows you to crop images by enlarging them and scrolling with the arrow keys.
    • Date Off: turns off the date and time stamp so that it does not print with the image.
