Camera Modes and Menus
Continuous Shooting: (Multiple frame icon) This mode allows the camera to capture a series of three consecutive images at approximately 0.2-second intervals. Exposure is automatically controlled, and the flash is unavailable. Pressing the Menu button offers the following options:
- Self-Timer: Turns the 10-second Self-Timer on or off.
- Manual Focus: Enables or disables the Manual focus option.
- Auto Bracketing: Activates the Auto Bracketing feature, and allows you to set the exposure variation to 1, 2/3, or 1/3 exposure values (EV).
- Set:
- LCD Brightness: Adjusts the LCD brightness level.
- Set-Up: Accesses the camera's Set-up menu, described below.
- File Size / Quality: Adjusts the image size and quality settings. Choices are (4M) 2,400 x 1,800, (2M) 1,600 x 1,200, (1M) 1,280 x 960, and (VGA) 640 x 480 pixels, with Fine, Normal, and Basic quality settings.
Manual Mode: (Camera icon with an "M") Manual exposure mode expands the exposure adjustment options (with the exception of shutter speed and aperture settings, which remain under automatic control). The Manual mode Photography menu (accessed by pressing the Menu button) is composed of three screens, with the following options:
- Self-Timer: Turns the 10-second Self-Timer On or Off.
- White Balance: Sets the camera's white balance to Automatic, or to match Sunny, Shade, Daylight Fluorescent, Warm White Fluorescent, Cool White Fluorescent, or Incandescent lighting conditions.
- ISO: Adjusts the camera's light sensitivity to 125, 200, or 400 ISO equivalents.
- Set:
- LCD Brightness: Adjusts the LCD brightness level.
- Set-Up: Accesses the camera's Set-up menu, described below.
- File Size / Quality: Adjusts the image size and quality settings. Choices are (4M) 2,400 x 1,800, (2M) 1,600 x 1,200, (1M) 1,280 x 960, and (VGA) 640 x 480 pixels, with Fine, Normal, and Basic quality settings.
- Manual Focus: Enables or disables the manual focus option.
- Sharpness: Sets the image sharpness to Hard, Normal, or Soft.
- Flash Intensity: Adjusts the flash power and brightness from -0.6 to +0.6 exposure values (EV) in one-third-step increments.
- Exposure Compensation: Adjusts the exposure from -1.5 to +1.5 exposure values (EV) in one-third-step increments.
- Multi-Exposure: Turns on the Multi-Exposure function, which overlays individual exposures on top of each other.
- Photometry: Sets the camera's exposure metering mode to Average, Spot, or Multi (default).
Automatic Exposure: (Auto) In Automatic exposure mode, the camera controls all exposure decisions, with the exception of image quality and flash. Pressing the Menu button pulls up the following options:
- Self-Timer: Turns the 10-second Self-Timer on or off.
- Voice Caption: Activates the Voice Caption feature, which records sound clips as long as 30 seconds to accompany captured images.
- Set:
- LCD Brightness: Adjusts the LCD brightness level.
- Set-Up: Accesses the camera's Set-up menu, described below.
- File Size / Quality: Adjusts the image size and quality settings. Choices are (4M) 2,400 x 1,800, (2M) 1,600 x 1,200, (1M) 1,280 x 960, and (VGA) 640 x 480 pixels, with Fine, Normal, and Basic quality settings.
Scene Position: (SP icon) In this mode, you can choose between a variety of preset "Scene" shooting modes, including Portrait, Scene (Landscape), Night Scene, and Black and White. Exposure is automatically controlled, and the flash may or may not be available, depending on the scene selected. The Record menu offers the following selections:
- Scene Position: Selects the scene mode. Choices include Portrait, Scene (Landscape), Night Scene, and Black and White.
- Self-Timer: Turns the 10-second Self-Timer on or off.
- Set:
- LCD Brightness: Adjusts the LCD brightness level.
- Set-Up: Accesses the camera's Set-up menu, described below.
- File Size / Quality: Adjusts the image size and quality settings. Choices are (4M) 2,400 x 1,800, (2M) 1,600 x 1,200, (1M) 1,280 x 960, and (VGA) 640 x 480 pixels, with Fine, Normal, and Basic quality settings.
Movie Mode: (Movie camera icon) This mode records moving images with sound for as long as 80 seconds at 320 x 240-pixel resolution. Digital zoom is the only available function. The menu options are limited to Set-up Menu and LCD Brightness.
Audio Mode: (Microphone icon) In Audio mode, the 4800 Zoom allows you to record audio for as long as 30 minutes per recording (depending on SmartMedia space). As with Movie mode, the menu options are limited to Set-up Menu and LCD Brightness.
Playback Mode: Accessed by pushing the Mode switch (under the eye-level viewfinder) to the green Playback symbol, this mode allows you to review captured images and movies. Files can be erased, played back in an automated slide show, write-protected, or set up for printing on DPOF-compatible devices. Still images can be enlarged and cropped, or viewed in an index display. The Playback Menu offers the following options:
- Erase: Deletes the currently displayed image: Frame, All Frames, or Formats the SmartMedia card (which erases all files, even write-protected ones).
- Playback: Activates an automatic slide show of all captured still images.
- Protect: Write-protects the currently displayed image (Frame Set) or all images on the card (Protect All). There's also an option to remove protection for the current image (Frame Reset) or all images (Unprotect All).
- DPOF: Marks individual frames (Frame Set) for printing on DPOF devices and turns the Time / Date mark On or Off. You can also review and remove print marks from the currently displayed image ((Review / Reset), and remove print marks from all frames (Reset All).
- Set:
- LCD Brightness: Adjusts the LCD brightness level.
- Set-Up: Accesses the camera's Set-up menu, described below.
- File Size / Quality: Adjusts the image size and quality settings. Choices are (4M) 2,400 x 1,800, (2M) 1,600 x 1,200, (1M) 1,280 x 960, and (VGA) 640 x 480 pixels, with Fine, Normal, and Basic quality settings.
Set-Up Menu: This menu is accessible in all exposure modes, as well as in Playback mode, by pressing the Menu button and scrolling to the Set option:
- Image Display: Controls the Postview and Preview options, which allow you to review images as soon as they are captured. Postview displays the most recently captured image for two seconds after capture and then automatically records it to the SmartMedia card. Preview displays the most recently captured image until you select whether or not to record the image. This menu also provides the option of turning the Preview off.
- Auto Power Save: Sets the camera to shut itself off after two or five minutes of inactivity. You can also turn the power save function off.
- USB Mode: Establishes the USB connection mode as DSC (for downloading images) or PC CAM (for using the camera as an Internet videoconferencing tool).
- Startup Screen: Turns on the startup screen that appears on the LCD monitor. (Not available in the Playback menu.)
- Set Startup Screen: Allows you to customize the Startup screen with your own image.
- Date/Time: Adjusts the camera's internal date and time setting.
- Frame Number: Sets whether or not the file numbering continues from one SmartMedia card to another (Cont), or whether it resets with each new card (Renew).
- Beep: Controls the camera's operating sounds, options are High, Low, or Off.
- Language: Sets the menu language to English or French.
- Reset All: Resets all the camera settings to the factory defaults (including Record and Playback menu options).
