Camera Modes and Menus
Continuous Shooting: (Multiple frame icon.) This mode allows the camera to capture a series of as many as five consecutive images at approximately 0.2-second intervals. Exposure is automatically controlled, and the flash is unavailable. Pressing the Menu button offers the following options:
- Self-Timer: Turns the 10-second Self-Timer on or off.
- Manual Focus: Enables or disables the manual focus option.
- Auto Bracketing: Activates the Auto Bracketing feature, and allows you to set the exposure variation to 1, 1/3, or 1/2 exposure equivalents (EV).
- Set:
- File Size / Quality: Adjusts the image size and quality settings. Choices are 2,832 x 2,128, 2,048 x 1,536, 1,280 x 960, and 640 x 480 pixels, with Fine, Normal, and Basic quality settings.
- LCD Brightness: Adjusts the LCD brightness level.
- Set-Up: Accesses the camera's settings menu, described later.
Manual Mode: (Camera icon with an "M.") Contrary to its name, manual exposure mode still leaves the shutter speed and aperture settings under automatic control. However, options such as white balance, ISO, metering, etc. are adjustable by the user. The Manual Mode record menu is composed of three screens of options, as shown below. The following Record menu options are available by pressing the Menu button:
- Self-Timer: Turns the 10-second Self-Timer on or off.
- White Balance: Sets the camera's white balance to Automatic, or to match Sunny, Shade, Daylight Fluorescent, Warm White Fluorescent, Cool White Fluorescent, or Incandescent lighting.
- ISO: Adjusts the camera's sensitivity to 100, 200, or 400 ISO equivalents.
- Set:
- File Size / Quality: Adjusts the image size and quality settings. Choices are 2,832 x 2,128, 2,048 x 1,536, 1,280 x 960, and 640 x 480 pixels, with Fine, Normal, and Basic quality settings.
- LCD Brightness: Adjusts the LCD brightness level.
- Set-Up: Accesses the camera's settings menu, described later.
- Manual Focus: Enables or disables the manual focus option.
- Sharpness: Sets the image sharpness to Hard, Normal, or Soft.
- Flash Intensity: Controls the flash power and brightness, adjustable from -0.6 to +0.6 exposure equivalents (EV) in one-third increments.
- Exposure Compensation: Adjusts the exposure from -1.5 to +1.5 exposure equivalents (EV) in one-third increments.
- Multi-Exposure: Turns on the Multi-Exposure function, which overlays individual exposures on top of each other.
- Photometry: Sets the camera's exposure metering mode to Average, Spot, or Multi (default).
Automatic Exposure: In Automatic exposure mode, the camera controls all exposure decisions, with the exception of the flash mode. Pressing the Menu button pulls up a limited selection of options:
- Self-Timer: Turns the 10-second Self-Timer on or off.
- Voice Caption: Activates the Voice Caption feature, which records sound clips as long as 30 seconds to accompany captured images.
- Set:
- File Size / Quality: Adjusts the image size and quality settings. Choices are 2,832 x 2,128, 2,048 x 1,536, 1,280 x 960, and 640 x 480 pixels, with Fine, Normal, and Basic quality settings.
- LCD Brightness: Adjusts the LCD brightness level.
- Set-Up: Accesses the camera's settings menu, described later.
Scene Postion: In this mode, you can choose between a variety of preset "scene" shooting modes, including Portrait, Scene (Landscape), Night Scene, and Black & White. Exposure is automatically controlled, and the flash may or may not be available, depending on the scene selected. The Record menu offers the following selections:
- Scene Position: Selects the scene mode. Choices include Portrait, Scene (Landscape), Night Scene, and Black & White.
- Self-Timer: Turns the 10-second Self-Timer on or off.
- Manual Focus: Enables or disables the manual focus option.
- Set:
- File Size / Quality: Adjusts the image size and quality settings. Choices are 2,832 x 2,128, 2,048 x 1,536, 1,280 x 960, and 640 x 480 pixels, with Fine, Normal, and Basic quality settings.
- LCD Brightness: Adjusts the LCD brightness level.
- Set-Up: Accesses the camera's settings menu, described later.
Movie Mode: (Movie camera icon.) This mode records moving images with sound for as long as 160 seconds at the 320 x 240 resolution size. Digital zoom is the only available function. The only menu option available is the Set Menu and LCD brightness adjustment.
Audio Mode: (Microphone icon.) In Audio mode, the 6800 Zoom allows you to record audio only for as long as one hour per recording (depending on SmartMedia space). As with Movie mode, the only menu option is the Set Menu and LCD brightness adjustment.
Playback Mode: Accessed by pushing the Mode switch to the playback symbol (as opposed to the Exposure Mode dial for the modes described above), Playback mode allows you to review captured images and movies. Files can be erased, played back in an automated slide show, write-protected, or set up for printing on DPOF devices. Still images can be enlarged and cropped, or viewed in an index display. The Playback Menu offers the following options:
- Erase: Deletes the currently displayed image, all frames, or formats the SmartMedia card (which erases all files, even write-protected ones).
- Playback: Activates an automatic slide show of all captured still images.
- Protect: Write-protects the currently displayed image or all images on the card. There is also an option to remove protection for the current image or all images.
- DPOF: Marks individual frames, or all frames, for printing on DPOF devices. You can also remove print marks from all frames.
- Set:
- LCD Brightness: Adjusts the brightness level of the LCD monitor.
- Volume: Increases or decreases the playback volume level.
- Set-Up: Accesses the camera's settings menu, described below.
Set-Up Menu: This menu is accessible in all exposure modes, as well as in Playback mode, simply by pressing the Menu button and scrolling to the Set option:
- Image Display: Controls the Postview and Preview options, which allow you to review the previously captured image. Also turns off the preview function.
- Auto Power Save: Sets the camera to shut itself off after two or five minutes of inactivity. You can also turn the power save function off.
- USB Mode: Establishes the USB connection mode as DSC (for downloading images) or PC CAM (for using the camera as an Internet videoconferencing tool).
- Startup Screen: Turns on the startup screen that appears on the LCD monitor.
- Set Startup Screen: Allows you to customize the Startup screen with your own image.
- Date/Time: Adjusts the camera's internal date and time setting.
- Frame Number: Sets whether or not the file numbering continues from one SmartMedia card to another, or whether it resets with each new card.
- Beep: Controls the camera's operating sounds, options are High, Low, or Off.
- Language: Sets the menu language to English or French.
- Reset All: Resets all the camera settings to the factory defaults (including Record and Playback menu options).
