Camera Modes and Menus

Setup Mode: Turning the Mode lever to the Setup position automatically displays the following settings menu, which controls several basic camera functions:

  • Date: Sets the camera's internal calendar and clock.
  • Format: Formats the memory card, erasing all images (even protected ones).
  • Beep: Turns the camera's beep sounds on or off.
  • Power Save: Enables or disables the camera's automatic shutoff feature, which turns the camera off after a period of inactivity. Time options are: No Power Off, 1, 2, or 6 minutes.
  • Auto Focus: Places the autofocus mechanism into Single or Continuous modes.
  • Mode Lock: Activates the Mode Lock function, which preserves camera settings whenever the camera is turned off, so that they are automatically recalled the next time the camera is powered on.
  • Digital Zoom: Turns the Digital Zoom function on or off.
  • Language: Changes the camera's menu language to English or Japanese.
  • Video Out: Sets the Video Out signal to NTSC or PAL.
  • File Number: Resets the file numbering when you select the Execute option. Unless the reset is executed, the numbering sequence continues from one card to the next.
  • Mode Reset: Resets all the camera settings to their defaults.

Playback Mode: Marked on the Mode lever with the traditional Playback symbol (a triangle within a rectangle), Playback mode allows the user to review captured images, write-protect files, delete unwanted images, and set up images for printing on DPOF devices. Pressing the Menu button in Playback mode displays the following menu options:

  • Multi: Displays as many as six thumbnail-sized images on the LCD screen.
  • Protect: Write-protects images against accidental deletion or manipulation in any other way.
  • Erase: Deletes the currently displayed image on the LCD screen.
  • All Erase: Deletes all images on the memory card, except write-protected images.
  • Rotate: Rotates the currently displayed image 90 degrees clockwise, 90 degrees counterclockwise, or returns it to its original orientation.
  • Auto Play: Sets up an automatic slide show sequence of all the captured images on the memory card. Menu options include: Execute, Interval (Minimum, 10, 15, or 30 seconds), and Start Frame (This Frame or 1st Frame).
  • Print: Marks images for printing on DPOF devices. Menu options include: Print Quantity, Index Print, and All Reset.

Record Mode: Record mode is designated by a small camera icon. The Menu button pulls up the first four menu options across the bottom of the LCD screen, which are accessed by scrolling with the left and right arrow buttons. Once highlighted, the icons provide the following menu items:

  • Self-Timer: Activates the Self-Timer mode. Pressing the OK button cycles between 10 seconds, 2 seconds, and normal shooting mode.
  • Image Quality / Mode: Pressing the OK button cycles through the available image resolutions and the Movie mode. Choices are: TIFF-RGB (2,048 x 1,536), Superfine (2,048 x 1,536), Fine (2,048 x 1,536), Normal (1,024 x 768), and Movie (320 x 240).
  • Exposure Compensation: Pressing the OK button activates Exposure Compensation and pressing the Up and Down arrow keys lightens or darkens the exposure from -2 to +2 exposure values (EV) in one-third-step increments.
  • Manual Options: Pressing the OK button brings up a submenu of Setting Details (see below).
  • Manual Options: These are the options available in the Manual Options submenu in Record Mode:
    • Color: Captures images in Color, Black and White, or Sepia.
    • White Balance: Sets the White Balance to Preset, Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, or Fluorescent.
    • AE Mode: Puts the camera into normal Program AE mode, or selects aperture settings of f/2.8 and f/6.2.
    • Focusing: Changes the focus control to Automatic or Manual.
    • Long Exposure: Accesses the slower shutter speeds (two, four, or eight seconds), or turns the long exposure mode off.
    • Sensitivity: Sets the camera's light sensitivity to Standard (100 ISO), or X2 or X4.
    • Metering: Changes the camera's metering system to Evaluative (default), Center-Weighted, or Spot.
