Camera Modes and Menus

Scene Program Mode
Offers a selection of preset "scene" shooting modes, for capturing good images in specific shooting situations. Available scene types are Portrait, Landscape, Sports, and Night Scene. Limited exposure controls are available, although the camera controls most settings.

Movie Mode
Records short movie clips with sound. The actual amount of recording time varies with the amount of memory card space, but recording will continue until either the Shutter button is pressed again or the memory card runs out of space. No exposure controls are available.

Auto Exposure Mode
Gives the camera control of all exposure parameters, although the user still can adjust flash mode, drive mode, file size and quality settings, and zoom.

Program AE Exposure Mode
Returns most of the exposure control to the user, although the camera remains in charge of aperture and shutter speed values. Pressing the up and down arrow keys selects a range of equivalent aperture/shutter speed combinations, though.

Shutter Priority Exposure Mode
Gives the user control over shutter speed (from 1/2,000 to two seconds), while the camera selects the best aperture value. All other exposure options are available.

Aperture Priority Exposure Mode
Similar to Shutter Priority mode, only now the user controls the aperture setting (from f/2.8 to f/8 in 10 steps) while the camera selects the shutter speed. All exposure options are available.

Manual Exposure Mode
Gives the user complete control over exposure parameters, including aperture and shutter speed. All exposure options are adjustable, but exposure compensation is disabled since there's no automatic exposure selection to adjust.

Playback Mode
This mode lets you scroll through captured images and movies, view a nine-image index display, zoom into a captured image to inspect it more closely, delete unwanted images, and set up images for printing on DPOF compatible devices.

Record Menu
Accessed by pressing the Menu button in any of the Record modes. Not all options will be available in all exposure modes.

  • Self-Timer: Turns the Self-Timer on or off.
  • White Balance: Sets the color balance of the image to Auto, Daylight, Shade, Daylight Fluorescent, Warm White Fluorescent, Cool White Fluorescent, or Incandescent.
  • AF Mode: Sets the AF area mode to Center, Multi, or Area.
  • Photometry: Changes the camera's metering mode to Average, Spot, or Multi (64-zone metering).
  • Set: Accesses the Setup menu (described further on), or the LCD brightness adjustment.
  • Auto Bracketing: Sets the step size between successive shots in the auto-bracketing mode. Choices are +/- 1/3, 2/3, and 1.0 EV steps.
  • Sharpness: Adjusts the in-camera image sharpening to Hard, Normal, or Soft.
  • Flash Brightness: Boosts or cuts the power of the built-in flash from -0.6 to +0.6 EV.

Playback Menu: Accessed by pressing the Menu button in Playback mode.

  • Erase: Deletes either all frames or the current frame from the memory card, also has an option to reformat the memory card.
  • Protect: Marks the current frame for write-protection, or all frames. Also disables protection.
  • Playback: Enables an automatic slide show of all images captured on the memory card, with options for different interval settings.
  • Voice Memo: Records a short, 30-second sound clip to accompany a captured image.
  • Set: Accesses the Setup menu (described below), the LCD/EVF brightness adjustment, or the playback volume adjustment.

Setup Menu: The following menu options automatically appear when entering Set mode:

  • Image Display: Turns the instant image review function on or off, or sets it to Preview mode. In Preview mode, you have the option of deleting the image before it is saved to the memory card.
  • Power Save: Tells the camera to shut itself off after two or five minutes of inactivity. You can also disable the Auto Power Off, in which case the camera will remain powered up until its batteries run down.
  • Format: Formats the xD-Picture Card, erasing all files (even protected ones).
  • Beep: Adjusts the camera's beep sound volume, or turns it off.
  • Shutter: Adjusts the shutter sound volume, or turns it off.

  • Date/Time: Sets the camera's internal clock and calendar.
  • Frame Number: Resets frame numbering with each new memory card, or continuously numbers frames from card to card.
  • USB Mode: Sets up the USB connection to operate in either DSC or PC CAM modes. DSC is the standard mode for downloading images. PC CAM lets the camera work as a web cam when connected to a computer, using the Windows-only PictureHello software included with the camera.
  • CCD-RAW: Activates the CCD-RAW recording mode, which records one image in RAW data mode in addition to a second image at the specified JPEG resolution. As is typical with CCD-RAW file formats, that of the S5000 is a proprietary one, but can be read via the software included with the camera.
  • Language: Changes the menu language to one of five languages. (English, Spanish, German, French, Japanese, and one other Asian language not named in the manual.)

  • Video System: Sets the video signal to PAL or NTSC formats.
  • Set Adapter Ring: Selecting Yes here sets up the camera to work with accessory lens adapter kits.
  • Discharge: Fully discharges the rechargeable batteries, which takes a maximum of 15 hours, depending on the amount of charge left in them. This option should only be used with NiMH batteries. (This is a nice feature, in case your NiMH charger doesn't have a "conditioning" option. While they aren't supposed to be subject to the so-called "memory" effect, my experience has been that NiMH cells benefit from occasionally being completely discharged and then recharged fully.)
  • Reset All: Resets all camera settings to their default values.
