(From Canon lens literature) Those looking to explore the world of macro photography will appreciate the stylish compact look of the new Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens, the first EF-M Macro Lens for the Canon EOS M Camera System, which features Image Stabilization and a pair of built-in miniature Macro Lites to enhance image quality during close-up photography.

First Macro Lens in the Canon EF-M lens series
Photographers looking for a compact, lightweight macro lens should look no further than the Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens, the first Canon Macro Lens specifically designed for the EOS M Camera System.

The new lens features a pair of built-in miniature Macro Lite electronic flash units that illuminate close-up subjects as needed, helping to freeze movement, enhance color accuracy and provide a better sense of depth and dimension. Two curved flash units surround the front element of the lens, with the ability to illuminate both simultaneously, or one at a time. Users are also able to adjust the brightness of the Macro Lites between "bright" and "dim" settings.

The standard focusing range of the Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens extends from infinity to life-size (1 time). Additionally, a Super Macro Mode allows shooting at even higher magnifications up to 1.2 times. This feature allows you to capture smaller details that really make your subjects stand out against the background.

Additional features of the Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens include:

  • Hybrid IS, the same feature as found on Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens, helps reduce camera shake for enjoyable handheld photography.
  • Stepping motor (lead screw-type STM) helps provide smooth and quiet focusing operation when taking photos, and near-silence when shooting videos.
  • One UD lens and two aspherical lenses help deliver outstanding image quality at all distance settings by reducing chromatic and spherical aberrations.
  • Angle of view similar to a 45mm standard lens (35mm equivalent) provides flexible image capture of various subjects and scenes at macro distances and beyond.
  • Tapered lens top shape makes it easy to capture high-quality images at close range without casting shadows.

Canon's EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens is scheduled to be available through authorized Canon dealers in June for an estimated retail price of US$299.99.

Very high IQ. Light and small. Brilliant canon for adding the led lights.
Please canon next on the list is a 60mm or even better 70mm macro version, WITH the led lights!

Great for macro of Still objects. With the M5 it is my preferred macro "on the fly". I actually like the M5 better compared to my M50 for this. The price and IQ for this price is incredible. Must buy.

Very small. Very light. Great optics. Great led's. Great price. Extra 1.2x is very cool!. Collapsing lens makes for a very useful compaction of the camera. 28mm is a reasonable lens to carry around (I know I complained about it in the chins).
Led's are not very bright. No way to mount either the twin or macro Canon flash units. Filter mount requires "lens hood (if you can call it that). Lens hood obscures led's. Focal length is too short--28mm is still only 45mm. Doing at least 45mm (72mm) w

Very neat lens for the Canon mirrorless system. But come on Canon....... Let's get going with a few more lenses now. You've started to improve the selections, but you have s long way to go. And the Sony Olympus Fuji and Panasonic lines are all kicking your butt. Also, the next eos-m body has to have a built in viewfinder!. I don't want to have to choose whether i want the accessory viewfinder or flash on the camera. Sometimes i want both. Overall, the m1 and m2 were lacking somewhat (but didn't deserve the comments made about them when they were released). But the latest m3 is a true winner. Checks ask the boxes... Even though the m3 isn't first place camera in each respective feature, it still makes for a very useful camera overall. And i shoot with a camera, not the fastest focus, not the most pixels etc. What matters is the photo at the end of the shoot! And Canon eos-M3 does a great job of providing that!
