Click for our Sony DSC-TX66 preview!Rounding out its announcements for the day, Sony has revealed four new designs aimed at fans of really compact digital cameras. They might all fit in your pocket, but beyond that they differ quite a bit, with each model being tailored to attract a different target customer.

The Sony DSC-TX66 is a camera for the fashion-conscious photographer who still wants plenty of resolution. Coupled to a new 18 megapixel BSI CMOS image sensor, the TX66 offers a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar branded 5x optical zoom lens. On the rear panel is a large, unusually high-res Organic LED display with a touchscreen overlay. Available from March 2012 for US$350, this model is covered in our Sony TX66 preview.

Dsc-tx20Next up is the Sony DSC-TX20. Sensor resolution is just slightly lower at 16.2 megapixels, and the lens is a 4x Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar zoom. The Organic LED display is replaced by the more common LCD display, still including a touch panel. However, despite a stylish exterior available in a variety of colors and textures, the TX20 hides a secret: it's ruggedized, offering water, dust, shock, and cold-proofing. More details can be found in our Sony TX20 preview, and this model ships from May 2012 from US$330.

Dsc-wx150The Sony DSC-WX150 takes the 18 megapixel sensor from the TX66, and places it behind a more powerful 10x optical zoom lens. Sony is describing this as the slimmest 10x zoom digicam on the market. The LCD is a 3.0-inch type, but with more most resolution than that in the TX20, and with no touch-panel overlay. This model does get the benefits of the latest-gen Sony BSI CMOS sensor though, including Full HD video. More details on this $250 model, which ships from May 2012, are in our Sony WX150 preview.

Dsc-w690Rounding out the group, we have the Sony DSC-W690. This model is the most affordable of the four, but still retains the slim 10x zoom of the WX150. It also adds back in the touch panel overlay that's absent in that model, but swaps the BSI CMOS sensor for a slightly lower-res 16 megapixel Sony Super HAD CCD chip. That change leads to a slight reduction in battery life, and a drop in video resolution to 720p, among other differences. More details can be found in our Sony W690 preview. The W690 ships from May 2012, with pricing of about US$180.

Specifications for all four cameras follow below.

Press Release

Sony Introduces Versatile New Lineup Of Cyber-shot Cameras

New Cameras Feature Ultra-thin Body and Lens Designs, Rugged Capabilities

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 27, 2012 – With the ability to deliver impressive, high-resolution images while underwater, outside or inside, during both day and night, Sony’s slim new line of Cyber-shots represent the ultimate in versatility for the compact camera space. Four new models announced today include the DSC-WX150, DSC-W690, DSC-TX66 and DSC-TX20 models.

The DSC-WX150 and DSC-W690 models are the world’s thinnest 10x optical zoom cameras – slimmer than any other 10x compact cameras currently offered in market (measured at slimmest part excluding lens).  This exceptionally thin design is largely attributed to the new “Advanced Aspherical” lens element, which allows the lens unit to be drastically smaller than those in previous 10x zoom Cyber-shots while still producing very highly detailed, accurate images.

The new TX66 camera features an ultra-slim, front-sliding design and measures about 12.2 mm (excluding lens cover), which is about the thickness of a standard AA size battery.  The similarly thin TX20 camera is Sony’s most “rugged” compact camera offering -- waterproof (up to 5m or 16ft), dustproof, shockproof (up to 1.5m or 5 ft) and freezeproof (up to 14°F).

Each of the new WX150 ,TX66 and TX20 cameras features a high-resolution “Exmor R” CMOS sensor and advanced BIONZ® image processor, enhancing low-light performance, Auto Focus speeds, image stabilization and opening up various multi-shot capabilities including 10 fps burst mode, “Background Defocus” mode, 3D still image shooting and more.  These models also have “Dual Record” functionality for capturing high-resolution still images while shooting video, and “Clear Image Zoom” digital zoom technology, which boosts optical zoom to 2x virtual capability (i.e. 5x optical zoom to 10x virtual zoom) at full camera resolution.

Each of the new models can shoot full HD video (at various resolutions) and offer “Picture Effect” options for creative photography.

Product Specs, Pricing and Availability
