Dig out the shoebox! Plustek offers film scanner rebates

If you're anything like us, there's something of a divide in your personal, photographic archive. You've probably got a fairly good handle on your digital photo collection, but chances are your photos from back in the film days are another matter entirely. Perhaps they're in storage, or maybe just hiding under the bed or at the back of a cupboard, but quite likely your old negatives and slides are lurking half-forgotten in dusty folders or boxes somewhere.
You might have been put off by the thoughts of the time and energy involved in converting your back catalog, or it could be that you just couldn't justify the cost of a dedicated film scanner. Sure, flatbed scanners with the ability to scan slides and negatives weren't that expensive, but if you weren't going to maximise the quality anyway, why bother to dig out your originals? Scanning a few of your favorites from prints was much easier.

Maybe we're just telling our own story, here, but if any of this rings true for you, now might be the time to finally do something to resurrect your lost memories. Scanner manufacturer Plustek Inc. just launched an instant rebate on two of its dedicated film scanners, including the top-of-the-line OpticFilm 7600i Ai, a model we reviewed in early 2010. Authorized Plustek resellers are now offering the OpticFilm 7600i Ai at a discount of US$100, while the entry-level OpticFilm 7400 gets a US$70 discount. That takes street pricing down to a little over US$350 for the OpticFilm 7600i Ai, and below $200 for the OpticFilm 7400. (And since they're instant rebates, there's no need for filling in forms and waiting on a rebate check; the discounts are applied immediately at the time of sale.)
So, the pricetag is no longer an excuse. Now you just need to find where you've hidden those negatives, and take a little time to bring them into the 21st century!
