The DJI Phantom is quickly becoming the quadcopter of choice for capturing low-cost but impressive aerial footage of the world. Along with being relatively inexpensive aerial drones -- DJI Phantoms retail for about $679 -- they're designed to be used with relatively inexpensive GoPro action cameras.
New York City-based director and producer Nicholas Doldinger recently used a DJI Phantom and a GoPro HD Hero3 to shoot some lovely aerial footage of the city he calls home, giving a fresh, bird's-eye perspective on this sprawling metropolis. In his video, titled Phantom First Flight, he actually makes New York seem kind of quaint and peaceful with footage captured over Grand Central Terminal, Times Square, and above parks in Manhattan. (My favorite part is when the quadcopter briefly follows a small protest rally in Union Square Park.)
Other cool videos we've seen recently shot with Phantom DJI quadcopters and GoPros include this fabulous footage of Niagra Falls, and this aerial video of surfers in Santa Cruz.
