If you want a new camera that will accompany you almost anywhere you care to go, be it in blazing sun or freezing cold, in rain, snow, sandstorm or even beneath the sea, your choices these days are plentiful. But what if you want an equally-rugged memory card?
Sure, it's nestled away safely inside the camera most of the time, but once the card is full and it's time for a swap, out your little SD card comes, back into the elements from which it had been protected. And on it lies your irreplaceable gold-mine of photos. And even inside the camera, it's subject to heat and cold, and at risk if the camera itself should happen to fail, allowing the elements inside.
We've seen a few ruggedized flash cards offered over the years, and now Delkin enters the fray with its own offering, the Delkin BLACK card line, described in its marketing materials as "waterproof, dustproof, extreme temperature resistant, and virtually unbreakable". Putting its money where its mouth is, Delkin backs up this reliability promise with a pledge that -- if your card should somehow fail -- it will be replaced with no questions asked inside a 48-hour window, free of charge. Even the return shipping for the failed card is provided without cost to the customer.
The Delkin BLACK series is said to have a temperature range of -40 to 185°F (-40 to 85°C), and an injection-molded design that makes for better durability. Although no specific water / dustproof ratings are provided, Delkin says the cards can be submerged for up to 72 hours, and subjected to up to 45 pounds of force.
Capacities of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB are available, and each has a UHS-I speed Class 3 rating, translating to a minimum sequential write speed of 30MB/second. Peak read and write speeds are said to be 99MB/sec and 80MB/sec respectively.
More details can be found on the Delkin website.
