It was Austrian-born photojournalist Ernst Haas who once said ‘The best zoom lens is your legs.’ It’s a sentiment that often gets ignored, especially when we have so many impressive zoom lenses around us, but it’s one that consistently holds true.

During this year’s WPPI conference, American portrait photographer Brian Smith revealed he shares a perspective similar to Haas’, which is echoed in the short presentation he gave.

Captured and posted to YouTube by Advancing Your Photography, the five minute video isn’t of the best production quality — it was filmed hand-held and only picked up the projected audio. But it’s more than good enough to take away a few key tips for shooting portraits and learning to use your feet, rather than a focus ring, to capture a more broad perspective of your subject and environment.
