Nikon ambassador Joe McNally visited Domenick European Car Repair in White Plains, New York to capture gritty, character-filled portraits. McNally is well-known for his adept and creative use of Speedlights in his work, which you can see in the video below.

Using a variety of Nikon SB-900 and SB-910 speedlights, McNally works to illuminate the "nooks and crannies" of the garage with accent and trim lighting. Ultimately, it's all about bringing out the character of the garage itself.

Using a Nikon D810 and Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G lens, McNally photographs two models in different areas of the garage. With classic cars in the background and numerous Speedlights set up throughout the garage, he's able to capture interesting and distinct images. For insight into what Joe McNally considers when working in a "studio" environment, be sure to check out the video below.

If you're interested in using off-camera flashes for portraiture, Joe wrote a guide for Nikon USA. He also wrote a guide specific to the Nikon SB-910 Speedlight. Lastly, he published a short video that covers basic portrait and lighting tips, which you can see below.
