Swiss photographer Fabian Oefner doesn't just capture single images, he creates rich composited scenes that present subjects in never before seen ways. His Disintegrating II series showcases performance vehicles as they are being blown apart.
From a description on his website, "The series explores essential questions about the relationship of time and reality, ultimately creating a visually rich rendition of a moment that never existed."
The high-end racecars in Oefner's series range from a classic 1936 Auto Union Type C to a semi-modern Porsche 956 from 1982, with a lot of exotic cars in between. As a massive petrol head, seeing images of blown apart cars does give me a sense of tension. Of course, rather than actually destroying the cars, Oefner captures individual images of model pieces of the car's internals and then uses Photoshop to create the composite image based on the original source image of the cars. Each image can take months to create.
This series follows up the 2013 series by the same name.
Oefner has created many other projects, including one called The Invisible Dimension which showcases colorful crystals reacting to soundwaves, magnetic liquids, and burning whiskey, among other things. You can see a TED Talk that Oefner did about his project below.
